Quickie: Hip Hop Theater
Many bands will tour for months at a time but that's nothing compared to Will Power performing Flow for the last few years. Flow is an original hip hop theater work that Power performs solo with music by DJ Reborn. The performance, which is currently booked in Miami Beach, combines poetry, acting and hip hop music to portray seven different characters created by Power. Source: Go with the Flow: Hip-hop stories. Quickies: Saigon's Year?, Be A Music Writer
Saigon's Year? For rapper Saigon's sake, let's hope his debut album is awesome because he's gotten almost too much press as the next big thing. After a flurry of coverage last summer and an appearance on Entourage, Saigon is now included in Newsweek's Who's Next in 2006 feature. But the bottom line will be the release of The Greatest Story Never Told in March with production by Just Blaze and Kanye West. Source: Music: Saigon. Be A Music WriterRolling Stone magazine, which has long covered much more than rock music, will be holding auditions next month for a reality tv series. Rolling Stone and MTV are teaming up to provide a glimpse at a group of interns who hope to become contract writers for Rolling Stone. RS publisher Jann Wenner has made it clear that this is a serious reality tv series, so there will be no hot tubs or hookups, at least, not on the screen. Quickie: Foxy Brown Speaks About Her Hearing Loss
After recent reports from her lawyer that Foxy Brown is almost totally deaf, Foxy herself came forward in a press conference to explain the situation. Foxy said that she suddenly began to lose her hearing during the recording of her upcoming album Black Roses and that she has been unable to hear other's voices for over six months. In the studio she has someone tap out the beats on her shoulder in order to record. Brown is scheduled to undergo surgery in January and her doctor has stated that she is expected to successfully regain her hearing. Source: Foxy Brown Says She Hasn't Heard A Thing For Six Months. Quickie: Hip Hop Anthem Haters
Atlanta's hip hop anthem, The ATL, has received mixed response as an official song of this Southern hip hop capital. Some folks feel that hip hop doesn't represent them, though they do not fully explain how any kind of music could truly represent everybody. Jermaine Dupri may have summed it up best when he described haters of The ATL as "stogey fogey people." Source: Some In Atlanta Not Feeling "The ATL" City Anthem. Quickies: Billboard Music Awards, Foxy Can't Hear
Billboard Music Awards50 Cent came away from last night's Billboard Music Awards with 6 trophies to tie Green Day for most awards. 50 won both artist and album of the year (Massacre) as well as chart related awards for R&B/Hip-Hop, Rap and Hot 100 artist of the year plus ringtone of the year for Candy Shop. Kanye West took home Billboard's Artist Achievement Award while Daddy Yankee won Latin album of the year for Barrio Fino. Source: Rapper, Rock Act Earn Six Honors Each. Foxy Can't HearOn a rather sad note, Foxy Brown's lawyer confirmed this week that Foxy is almost totally deaf. He announced her hearing problems when asked why he and the rapper were exchanging notes during court procedures rather than talking. Apparently Foxy Brown has already gone through surgery once and is hoping a follow-up procedure will resolve the problem. Source: Lawyer: Foxy Brown Is Deaf. Quickies provided by Hip Hop Reporter.

Quickies: Lil Wayne Reps N.O., XM Music Awards
Lil Wayne Reps N.O.Though Lil Wayne recently turned 23, he already has multiple solo albums and is ready to revive New Orleans rap with today's release of Tha Carter II. Actually, it's hard to know if New Orleans rap will return to the city and when people write about New Orleans music, they tend to leave rap out of the picture. Yet Lil Wayne still reps Hollygrove on his songs and Tha Carter II will be repping a grown Lil Wayne and a disappeared New Orleans. Source: Set to Put New Orleans Rap Back on Top. XM Music AwardsYesterday XM Satellite Radio announced the winners of the first annual XM Nation Music Awards based on over 1.4 million votes from music fans. While U2 beat out Kanye West and Green Day for the XM Now award for Most Important Established Artist, Kanye did win the Urban Artist of the Year Award. UK/Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A. also got special attention by winning the XM Next award for Most Important Indie Emerging Artist. Quickies: Gottis Acquitted in Hugfest, Silly King T.I.
Gottis Acquitted in HugfestIrv and Christopher Gotti, aka the Lorenzo brothers, were acquitted last week of charges of money laundering. Apparently the courtroom broke out into a hugfest starting with the lawyers, then friends and family including Ja Rule and finally, outside the courtroom, they hugged some of the jurors. Whether or not the jurors were somewhat star struck, the acquittal was based on all agreeing that the government had a very weak case. Source: Hip-Hop Producers Get Acquittal, Then Hugs, From Jurors. Silly King T.I.Though there are a variety of reasons T.I. might claim the crown of King of the South, his recent explanation seems rather weird. T.I. claims that no one ever called themselves the King of the South before and, since he invented the title, that makes him King. Though Ludacris might object to such bizarre reasoning, T.I.'s next album The King is expected to offer a few more reasons or so we hope. Source: Mixtape Monday. Quickie: Spike Lee on Hip Hop Movies
In a recent interview, director Spike Lee revealed that he prefers Barbershop over Get Rich or Die Tryin' though he doesn't seem to like Barbershop very much. Spike stated that he prefers Ice Cube's Barbershop over 50 Cent's autobiographical movie because "in Barbershop, you're not trying to kill anybody." However, though Spike Lee is known for helping open up the field for African American films, he says that no one should blame him for such flicks as Barbershop or Beauty Shop. Leading the rise of Reggaeton, Daddy Yankee is following his 2004 chart topping album Barrio Fino with a CD/DVD combo called Barrio Fino en Directo. The release will include video of his last world tour and live versions of such hits as Gasolina plus new tracks. Though Daddy Yankee has been working with stars like Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams, he's making sure the first single off Barrio Fino en Directo features the reggaeton sound for which he's known.
