Thru My Eyes: Thoughts on Tupac Amaru Shakur in Pictures and Words
The world has been without him for nine years and yet legendary rapper Tupac Shakur continues to generate intrigue and interest in his movies, music and words. To date, his CDs, spoken word projects and movies continue to sell, recently surpassing half billion units sold and a staggering four billion dollars in combined revenue.
In celebration of his life, one of Tupacs close friends and director of his last three music videos, Gobi has authored, Thru My Eyes: Thoughts on Tupac Amaru Shakur in Pictures and Words (Atria Books; November 1, 2005; $19.95; ISBN: 0-7434-5700-5), a color and black & white portfolio of 50 intimate photographic images, along with personal commentary. These never-before-published pictures of the late music genius were captured in 1996 the last year of Tupacs life. During this time Gobi became intricately involved with Tupac producing and directing his music videos and preparing to launch Tupacs feature film production company. Tupac and Gobi became intimate friends and creative partners. As told in the Thru My Eyes Tupac launched Gobis career as a music video director with 2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted as Gobi has since directed videos for Yoko Ono, Missy Elliot and Mary J. Blige.
Thru My Eyes is packed with Gobis intimate reflections and first hand observations of Tupac, until his unfortunate dying day. From the shooting incident that cost Tupacs life to back stage humorous and candid photographs that show Tupac many personalities and moods. Gobis first hand observations and photos make Thru My Eyes a definite must read for any Tupac fan or rap historian.
The book includes a Foreword by Tupacs mother, Afeni Shakur who states that Thru My Eyes offers a personal view of Tupac that warrants exposure.
Through pictures and words, Gobi portrays Tupac in a light some fans may not be familiar with.
Gobis photos reveal how Tupac was no manufactured pop idol. Photos taken on video and film sets underscore Pacs true work ethic, says Gobi. Tupac could work twenty-two hours-a-day, raising the bar for everyone working alongside him. A true revolutionist, Tupac understood tomorrow was promised to no one.
In the final pages, Gobi also gives a historic narrative account of what it was like for him to sit vigil during the seven days in 1996 while Tupac remained hospitalized.
A portion of the authors proceeds will be donated to the Tupac Amaru Shakur foundation. Please visit the foundations Web site at www.tasf.org.
In 1997, his mother, Afeni Shakur, established The Tupac Amaru Center in Stone Mountain, Georgia, dedicating Tupacs legacy to youth. Earlier this year, Tupacs new album, containing previously unreleased songs entitled Loyal to the Game, debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. An amazing array of rap artists read and rap Tupacs poetry on The Rose 2: Music Inspired By Tupacs Poetry, a tribute album created back in 2002.
Tupac Amaru Shakurs impact on urban and American pop culture during his lifetime and beyond his death is undeniable
