Music by Yellow Dog Records Artists Featured Throughout the Film "Hustle & Flow"

Music from several artists on the Yellow Dog Records label contributes to the distinctive musical atmosphere of the major motion picture Hustle & Flow, released today by Paramount/MTV.

(PRWEB) July 22, 2005 -- Music from several artists on the Yellow Dog Records label contributes to the distinctive musical atmosphere of the major motion picture Hustle & Flow, released today by Paramount/MTV.

Director Craig Brewer set the entire film in his native Memphis, and insisted on using authentic Memphis music throughout. Brewer had in mind sounds from classic soul and blaxploitation grooves and called on Memphis musician/producer Scott Bomar to compose the films score. Bomar recorded it with musicians from The Bo-Keys, including Skip Pitts and Willie Hall.

Pitts, longtime guitarist for Isaac Hayes, is known for his iconic wah-wah guitar in Shaft. Hall was the drummer for several of Hayes' albums including "Shaft" and "Hot Buttered Soul" and his signature tight hi-hat pattern weaves throughout the movie. In an interview with the Memphis Commercial Appeal, filmmaker John Singleton ("Boyz N the Hood"), the executive producer of Hustle & Flow, enthused, To have these classic musicians is the icing on the cake to shooting a little movie in Memphis.

The Bo-Keys debut album, The Royal Sessions, was nationally released by Yellow Dog Records in May 2004 to international acclaim from major media outlets including NPRs All Things Considered (which deemed the album a Memphis tour-de-force), NPRs Fresh Air, USA Today, The London Times, New Yorker, and House of Blues Radio Hour. The Bo-Keys, made up of a mix of veteran Stax session musicians and young Memphis up-and-comers, were also nominated for a W.C. Handy award for The Royal Sessions.

In addition to the Bo-Keys score, tracks by several other Yellow Dog artists with Memphis ties are included throughout the films background. Calvin Newborns After Hours Blues provides a sultry background to an early scene in Darnells bar, while Mark Lemhouses Edwins Lament plays during a pivotal episode in a pawnshop. Under the Mountain, a spirited bluegrass-style composition by Jason Freeman (Bluff City Backsliders) provides the intro as the films main character drives to a convenience store.

Westcoast Takeover To Include Third Degree

KEXP Launches Music Podcasts Today

SEATTLE, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- KEXP 90.3/91.7FM and KEXP.ORG, Seattle's eclectic non-commercial music station now offers a podcast of full-length songs by fourteen Pacific Northwest artists, making it the first radio station to offer a music radio podcast of this scope. TERRY MCMILLAN'S HOMOPHOBIC STATEMENTS DANGEROUS SAYS PSYCHOLOGY OF HIP HOP AUTHOR

Sparks have been flying between Terry McMillan and her husband Jonathan Plummer, as McMillan hurls insults, and drops a juicy plot that rivals any lust laced fiction. A literary titan, penning novels such as Waiting To Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, McMillan filed for a divorce from her Jamaican born love amid accusations that he is gay. Reported too, is that McMillan prefers an annulment. I dont want to negate the torment that Terry McMillan has to endure during this time in her life, but she does sound like a tempestuous homophobe, says Mental Health Therapist and Personal Advisor to the stars, Terence McPhaul. Ending a relationship is a difficult process, however, it concerns me when I hear Terry [McMillan] make inflammatory statements about gay men as if they alone are the cause of the entire AIDS pandemic. McPhaul adds, Her misguided statements can be dangerous. The fact of the matter is, that no one should venture outside of a committed relationship, McPhaul opines.

To clarify further McPhaul, who is author of The Psychology of Hip Hop and The Celebrity Psyche says, there are individuals who have contracted HIV/AIDS through sharing needles and other means, so the necessity of a person to know the sexual history of a partner is not negated because a person is heterosexual. It is true that men on the down-low do exist, but this is not a new occurrence, however, only recently has it been sensationalized; mostly by individuals who would rather not have to take responsibility for their own behavior, said McPhaul.

Of course, there are men and women out there who act irresponsibly, knowing of their HIV/AIDS status and failing to disclose this to a sexual partner. And while this act may be unconscionable, gay men alone are not to blame. To date, there is no reported evidence that her husband has exposed her to HIV/AIDS, yet the melodrama continues. Obviously, the divorce proceedings and public discussions have created a difficult climate for Plummer who is McMillans junior by 23 years. Terry is obviously angry, and her ego suffered a significant blow. Given her personality, I am not surprised at the measures she has taken to exact revenge on her estranged husband, McPhaul said.

McPhaul is regularly sought by program directors of TV talk shows and national media as an expert in the field of Mental Health, to deliver perspective or respond to programming regarding social and behavioral issues. Indie Label Scores Podcasting Hit on iTunes

Alpha Pup Records, a small independent label based in Los Angeles, enjoys massive success with its DJ-mixed podcast on iTunes. The "Alternative Hip-Hop Lounge" has attracted over 40,000 subscribers since its launch on July 1st, and shows no signs of slowing down.

Since the launch of iTunes 4.9 on June 28, podcasting has caught on like wildfire, with iTunes users racking up over a million subscriptions within the first two days.

Alpha Pup Records was one of the first independent labels to deliver a music podcast. International Hip-hop documentarian launches Sankofa Tour 2005

Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi, director/producer of the films Inventos: Hip Hop Cubano and Homegrown: Hip Life In Ghana has decided to broaden the reach of his groundbreaking documentaries, by using the film's popularity to inspire support for progressive Hip-hop communities around the world.

Eli recently completed one year of touring with Inventos: Hip Hop Cubano nationally, and internationally, holding screenings in theaters, community centers, universities, high schools, and group homes. The Inventos Sankofa Tour will launch this July in Colombia, making its way to Venezuela, Santo Domingo and other islands in the Caribbean. With your support we will be able to travel in order to donate much needed equipment and resources to artists who inspire and uplift the international Hip Hop community.

Global Hip Hop is often faced with the challenge of having to create without proper technological tools and media resources. The Inventos Sankofa Tour hopes to mobilize our communities outstanding network of audiences, aficionados, and supporters, to donate the tools and equipment needed to keep the spirit of perseverance, innovation, and free flowing creativity alive in Hip Hop communities worldwide.

LiL Fella Productions LLC has signed Vince "Da Produca" Carter to fill the position as Staff Producer. He comes to us from Philadelphia, PA, where he was an unsigned producer. Vince "Da Produca" Carter role will vary as a Staff Producer, producing music for signed and unsigned recording artist and other entertainment projects.

He was discovered a year ago and within that year producing many tracks for LiL Fella Productions. During that time we have discovered his unique style and signature sound at the same time developing a relationship.

As a youth, music has been in his blood from the early years, playing various instruments such as the piano, viola, violin, cello, trumpet, cornet, recorder, guitar, bass, and little drums. He took up the piano at the age of seven at Settlement Music School in West Philadelphia. His classical talents got him into one of the top magnet schools in the city: The Girard Academic Music Program, better known as G.A.M.P. While attending G.A.M.P. from middle school to high school graduation, he was involved in several activities: orchestra, string ensemble, concert choir, television, and basketball. Besides the activities, Vince has sung for and with Bill Clinton, Governor Ed Rendall, Peter Nero and the Philly Pops and has performed at the Academy of Music with the Philadelphia orchestra.

His songwriting began at the age of six, writing about what he saw in his dreams and his producing career began at the age of 16, working with only a cheap Yamaha keyboard. It started off as a joke until people started to like it, so he saved his money to come up with a mini-studio. Producing slowly helped him climbed the ladder, sending him to do work in the states of Philadelphia, Maryland, Washington D.C., and New Jersey.

While trying to get material on the radio as well as a deal, he was turned down several times because he wasn't taken seriously. With all hope gone, he saved money to acquire his partner in crime, a Phantom keyboard. Vince came roaring back getting a buzz all around the city of Philadelphia and was the hot producer to work with. Since then, he has been offered gigs with Hollewood, Philly's Most Wanted, and several other rappers and singers. His personality is the key to his success and his song ideas are out of this world.

Sciax Corp. and Pickwick Group Reach Distribution Agreement in Principle

Black Male Commission Convenes Town Hall Meeting at National Urban League Conference; Hillary Clinton, Danny Davis to Participate

The Honorable Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator, New York and the Honorable Danny Davis, U.S. Representative 7th Congressional District, Illinois and Kevin Powell, author, hip hop historian will participate in a plenary session dealing with the plight of the Black Male, Marc H. Morial, National Urban League announced today.

The plenary session titled; The Black Male: Endangered Species or Hope for the Future will be held at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 28 as part of the National Urban League Annual Conference, which takes places July 27th - 31st at the Washington Convention Center. The Honorable Rodney Slater, former Cabinet Secretary and Partner, Patton Boggs will preside.

The Black Male Commission is charged with exploring and formulating concrete recommendations and solutions to address the alarming inequities, disparities and social trends disproportionately affecting Black males. It was also created to influence policies, practices and programs aimed at ensuring Black males are empowered, prepared and equip to participate in the social, political and economic mainstream of America. The Town Hall meeting is a part of the National Urban League's commitment to establish a Commission on the Black Male: Renewal, Revival, and Resurrection.

The Town Hall meetings are typically held at a major university, college or a mega-church in an urban center design to address the local and national needs of Black men in America. In the past year the National Urban League has hosted town hall meetings or planning sessions on the campus of Morehouse College (Atlanta), COBO Hall (Detroit), the Shelby County Department of Corrections (Memphis) and Washington, D.C.

Fox Interactive Media To Consolidate News Corps US Web Properties

LOS ANGELES, CA, July 15, 2005 - News Corporation today announced the formation of Fox Interactive Media (FIM), a new unit that will leverage the strength of Foxs distinctive entertainment, news and sports brands across the Internet to offer a richer online experience to its millions of users. Veteran media and interactive executive Ross Levinsohn will become President of FIM, which will be based in Los Angeles. Additionally, veteran Fox News executive Bert Solivan will join as Executive Vice President.

6 Months Into Touring, One.Be.Lo Kicks It In The Sun On The Vans Warped Tour and Other Summer Dates

(Brooklyn, NY July 13, 2005) One.Be.Lo, one of 2005's most critically lauded indie hip-hop MC's, has just added over 60 Summer 05' tour dates including a feature spot on the Van's Warped Tour. One.Be.Lo has been touring in support of his debut album, S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M., non-stop since January, and will now finish out the summer with appearances at smaller local venues while traveling throughout the country as part of the Warped Tour.

Hard work and incessant touring is not a new phenomenon for the Pontiac, Michigan native. One.Be.Lo (also known as One Many Army) has been writing rhymes since 1988 and rockin' mics since 1992. Reggaeton is the newest music movement to impact the United States by way of its Latin American roots. As a cross-cultural genre, reggaeton is influenced by Jamaican music (reggae), Latin tropical music (salsa/merengue/bachata, etc.) and urban hip-hop music. Starting in the 80s in Panama and making its way through the underground movement of urban youth in the Caribbean and neighboring nations, including Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, and Nicaragua, etc., reggaeton reinvented itself in Puerto Rico where it took new roots so that it could surface in the United States, particularly in urban centers with a high concentration of Latinos. As an urban genre of music, reggaeton owes much to hip-hop, both in terms of production and marketing. Recently, urban artists have begun to see their influence on reggaeton and have responded by welcoming reggaeton into the genre of urban music. This is evidenced by the fact that many multi-platinum hip-hop artists are collaborating with reggaeton artists and doing reggaeton remixes of their own songs.

On the West Coast, reggaeton has taken off in the last two years. In Los Angeles, radio has begun to support the genre and leading the reggaeton radio movement have been radio stations Power 106 (KWPR-FM) urban format and #1 radio station in the Los Angeles DMA and Super Estrella (KSSE-FM) Latin pop station. Spanish Broadcasting Systems kicked Los Angeles radio support of reggaeton up a notch in June by changing the format of one of their stations over entirely to a reggaeton and hip-hop format. The new station, called Latino 96.3 (KXOL-FM) gives urban Latinos in Los Angeles what they have been wanting for a very long time an urban format station that supports their bi-lingual lifestyle.

La Invasin del Reggaeton Part II is another example of Orjuela Entertainment, Total Entertainment and Machete Music delivering the live reggaeton acts that Los Angeles wants to see. Headlining acts Ivy Queen and Luny Tunes were nominated for the newly created category of Reggaeton Album Of The Year by Billboard Music Awards 2005. Student Advocacy Finds a New Voice in School for Democracy and Leadership

First School Year Ends with Advances in Scholastic Performance and Social Activism

NEW YORK, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The School for Democracy and Leadership in Brooklyn today celebrates the close of its first year in helping students participate and achieve in a new learning environment. Exams are done. Lockers are emptied. Textbooks have been returned and final grades have been sent home. And 150 sixth and ninth graders, who just nine months ago chose a unique approach to learning, can now reflect on how the 2004-2005 school year progressed and what they look forward to in the coming year.

"The smaller, more focused setting at the School for Democracy and Leadership has opened up opportunities for me to learn and succeed," said one ninth grade student. "Before coming to SDL, I attended a larger, overcrowded high school where less attention was paid to students' individual interests. At SDL, the teachers listen to our opinions and help us to accomplish personal goals. I'm glad I decided to come here; it has been a great experience this past year being able to participate in more hands-on activities and affecting the shape of the school and community through change projects."

Formed in association with the New York Urban League, New School University's Center for Urban Education and Sadie Nash Leadership Project, the School for Democracy and Leadership is rooted in the belief that democracy and education are inextricably linked. The school was launched to foster a learning environment that uniquely ties student choice, community involvement and the realization of personal potential. Providing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, SDL aims to cultivate confident leaders and critical thinkers whose academic accomplishments and sense of connection with the larger community empower them to become meaningful participants in the world around them.

SDL joined more than 50 small, theme-based secondary schools that opened their doors in 2004 as part of Mayor Bloomberg's initiative to transform education and reverse alarmingly low graduation rates in New York City.

"The School for Democracy and Leadership represents an opportunity for students to take a more active role in shaping their own education and their communities. After only one school year, it's clear that the educational principles underlying this approach are taking root," said Nancy Gannon, co-founder and principal. "Students are both meeting and exceeding expectations. For example, eight students passed the Math Regents this year, despite the fact that we were hoping to prepare them over two years. Four students are preparing for the Physics Regents, a course that a very small fraction of pupils -- mostly as seniors -- take in New York City. And reading scores for the ninth grade are up 30%. And while test scores are important, just as important is the high level of student engagement we see daily, in contributing to their own educational progress under the leadership of an equally motivated SDL faculty."

SDL provides students with a range of opportunities to transform themselves and their environment through participation. For example, one student had the rare opportunity to observe youth cases at the Red Hook Youth Court that inspired new insights into and how the community deals with problem youth. Other students proudly led 2004 voter registration drives. Further, others led a lobby in Albany against the inequitable way in which the city is funded for education versus other communities in NY State. One 14-year old student even undertook the task of helping create a library for SDL.

Hip-Hop Reader Summit

SDL hosted the kick-off of the Hip-Hop Reader Program in New York City with Russell Simmons of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, Marc H. Morial of the National Urban League, and Patrick Gaston of the Verizon Foundation. Hip-Hop Reader is a youth-based literacy and leadership initiative designed to engage public high school students in reading and discussing books, poetry, lyrics and issues important to their lives. The summit featured three key reading ciphers which integrated multi-sensory activities for students -- sight, sound and touch, music and art -- to demonstrate the power of literature.

Thirteen's Human Rights 101 Project

SDL was one of a few schools around the Tri-State Area to be awarded a grant to work on a human rights issue of importance. Students spent the year studying and preparing a teach-in about the importance of immigrant students' right to education, and the importance of the Federal D.R.E.A.M. Act. Among other things, this act provides the opportunity for undocumented students to get financial aid for college and be granted documentation.

Science Fair with Columbia University and Polytechnic University

The school's first annual science exhibition showcased innovative projects focusing on model rocket design, competitive robot construction, water erosion analysis, the study of sea-side crab morphology, and more. One student, for instance, who was interested in developing robots for combat built a simple robot for the KISS Robotics Competition. Another student interested in reducing energy use explored how to power motors using solar panels.

Distinguished scientists from Columbia University and Polytechnic University, who work in the fields of computer science, nanotechnology, astrophysics and chemistry, participated in judging the exhibits and provided winners an opportunity to tour their labs.

MIT and McGill University Research

SDL sixth-graders traveled to Rockaway Beach along the Atlantic Ocean to participate in invasive crab research. The students are part of a joint program between MIT, McGill University, and citizens to set-up a monitoring program along the Northeast coastline. The goal is to determine the prevalence of crabs that have arrived here from across the Atlantic Ocean, and which have started to take over the food and habitat of the plants and animals that are native to this area.

"A key event for all students at the end of the school year is the creation and presentation of a portfolio," said Jhumki Basu, SDL science teacher and New York City Teaching Fellow. "In their portfolios, students demonstrate the work they have pursued, the essential skills demanded, and reflect on areas where they are strong as well as areas that need improvement. Almost every child, despite moments of self-doubt, has risen to the challenge of completing a portfolio. For the teachers at SDL, this is especially a time of pride and reflection. It is amazing to see how much students have matured over the course of the year."

2nd Annual Atlanta HipHop Film Festival Returns

ATLANTA, GA. (July 11, 2005) Creative Circle Entertainment announces the 2nd Atlanta HipHop Film Festival taking place in the month of April 2006. The three-day festival grants awards to films influenced by HipHop culture as well as notable HipHop musicians who have transitioned from music to film. Creative Circle Entertainment welcomes filmmakers from the U.S. and abroad to submit their work for consideration. Last year, the festival had notables: Sekyiwa 'Seta' Shakur, Jason Weaver, Lazy Bone, ReignDrop, Lil' Scrappy, Rasheeda, Xstacy of Whodini, Atlanta Falcon's TJ Duckett, Ralph Farquhar, Jessica Care Moore, to Dylon formerly of Da Band who participated, in addition to seeing award recipients, Ludacris and Mos Def recorded acceptance speeches.

"This is a unique opportunity to spotlight the synergy of HipHop and film, two of the most powerful artistic media of our generation.
