Hip-Hop Superstar The Game, Meagan Good and Larenz Tate Join Tyrese Gibson in Rogue Pictures' 'Waist Deep'

Directed by Vondie Curtis Hall; Production Underway

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Hip-hop superstar The Game and actors Meagan Good and Larenz Tate are joining actor Tyrese Gibson in the cast of Rogue Pictures' urban action thriller "Waist Deep." Directed by Vondie Curtis Hall (who last helmed the acclaimed "Redemption," starring Jamie Foxx), the movie began production this week. Rogue Pictures president David Linde made the announcement today.

"Waist Deep" is being produced by Preston Holmes (executive producer of Focus Features' February release "Something New"). Ted Field (head of Radar Pictures), Russell Simmons and Stan Lathan are executive-producing the film, with Dwight Williams (executive producer of "Hustle & Flow") line-producing. Mr. Hall wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, the previous drafts of which were written by A. Michael Mahern and Darin Scott, respectively. Executive vice president, production Amy Kaufman, who will make the transition to independent producing and be based at Focus Features this fall, is supervising the Los Angeles-based "Waist Deep" shoot for president of production John Lyons. Focus, headed by co-presidents Mr. Linde and James Schamus, holds international sales rights to all Rogue movies.

"Waist Deep" follows an ex-con, O2 (to be played by Mr. Gibson), who is suddenly plunged into a life-or-death situation. Trying to go straight for the sake of his young son Junior, O2 is forced to go back outside the law when Junior is kidnapped in a carjacking. His son is now in the hands of a vicious criminal leader, Meat (The Game). O2's shady cousin Wanna Be (Mr. Tate) is caught between loyalties, and so the only person who can or will help O2 now is wily street-smart hustler Coco (Ms. Good). With the clock ticking down, the heat between them rises as they become a lawbreaking couple, on an action-packed tear through town to save Junior and outwit the underworld.

The Game, whose album "The Documentary" debuted at #1 on the Billboard/Soundscan Top 100 chart this past winter, is making his feature debut in "Waist Deep." Ms. Good has starred for Focus Features in two films, the Sundance Film Festival award winner Brick (to be released in March) and "Deliver Us from Eva." Mr. Tate recently starred in "Crash" and the Academy Award-winning "Ray." Mr. Gibson currently stars in "Four Brothers."

The Roof Records Emerges to Discover, Develop and Promote New Fusions and Latin Urban Rhythms

New independent label will become home to well-known artists, new talents and producers that have come to set the standard of Latin urban music

Miami(PRWEB) August 10, 2005 -- Anthony Perez, president and CEO of Perfect Image Film and Video Production, and creator of the successful television program The Roof, announced today the launch of a new independent label - The Roof Records - dedicated to discovering, developing and promoting new musical fusions and rhythms within the explosive and popular genre of Latin urban music in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

So far this year, the MG crew has performed in several key US markets, including Chicago and New York City in April they headlined the final night of the A3C Independent Hip-hop Festival in Atlanta, and in August will do an east coast run with the Vans Warped Tours Code of tha Cutz (COTC) stage. In addition to Minaminas performances, COTC will be joined by nationally touring underground Hip-hop artists such as Definitive Jux Records artist Hangar 18. On August 11th Minamina will return home to Atlanta to perform at the Atlantis Music Conference before hitting the road for the second leg of the 2005 tour.

Thanks to RedEye Distribution and Atlanta indie Hip-hop label ArcTheFinger Records, Four Farmer Circus, (4FC) the fourth and most ambitious full-length MG album, will be available nationally in Tower Records, Virgin Megastores, Borders Books and music as well as numerous independent record stores on August 9th 2005. A fearless composite of tones and styles, 4FC is built around the concept of a late-late show horror movie. Through a series of skits that tie in with the songs, the album takes the listener through a twisted evening at the traveling Four Farmer Circus. The four members of Minamina transform into demonic alter-egos to prey on innocent victims in the towns they visit. The record draws as much from comic books and emo-core records as it does from house, funk and other more traditional Hip-hop influences. Cartoonist Tyson McAdoo (www.tysonmcadoo.com) whose body of work includes several cover-art pieces for legendary DC and Marvel Comics series, including The Punisher, Superman and Batman, provides album artwork consistent with the musics demented yet oddly lighthearted feel.

Pre-release critical feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Big, the first 12-inch single cut from 4FC, is already finding its way into heavy rotation on college radio stations across the US. One day on his way back from O.T. hustlin' he ran into some of his peoples from his hood and formed a group called "GANGREEN" which soon caught the attention of brother Sticky Fingaz of ONYX...and from there it was on.

NEW YORK (PRWEB) August 10, 2005 -- X1, Born march 6, 1979 in Brooklyn , N.Y, where a year later he moved to South Jamaica Queens, where he got his first break in the music business. He was 16 years old, selling drugs on the corners of Queens trying to get rich quick.

But trouble always seemed to follow him until he realized that this wasn't the way out of the hood. Till one day on his way back from O.T. hustlin' he ran into some of his peoples from his hood and formed a group called "GANGREEN" which they all used to hang out on Rockaway blvd. and131st. in front of Kennedy's Fried Chicken.

One day, fresh off of tour ONYX came through and he discussed the group "GANGREEN" with them, they immediately hit the studio, and from there it was on. They shot their first video called "I'LL MURDER YOU" which was produced by Fredro Star. They had the whole hood going crazy, they were HOT!!! But for some reason labels were interested, but not totally interested. Every record label that demo was shopped to would always ask, "Who's that one kid???" That one kid was X1.

Onyx quickly recognizing this, brought X1 on board full blast with there project. He out-shined members of the group in certain areas and help them creatively. The titled album "SHUT 'EM DOWN" came out and went Gold, which was helped by some of the previous singles that had come out before the album such as a song called, "THE WORST" which was one of X1's first videos that he shot with Onyx feat. "WU TANG CLAN" where he shined tremendously.

His performance earned him the respect he deserved from some of the elite rappers in the game at that time. The next video he shot was called "REACT" feat. 50 CENT. A lot of people don't know X1 and 50 CENT were very close , 50 would hang out at there studio sessions hoping to get 16 bars on a record some where, but X1 respects 50 for doing his own thing and being one of the top dogs in the game today. X1 was also cool with JA RULE, he watched JA go from Cash Money Click to being one of the most successful pop artist in hip hop.

After the Onyx album X1 focused on his solo career leaving the Onyx camp but still on good terms with all of the members, which he later on helped them with there solo projects. He eventually signed a deal ith "MIKE TYSON REC." when at the time Blue Williams was the president of the label, soon Blue was fired and the label then was ran by Jimmy Henchman and his brother Mario which X1 had a good relationship with.

A year after that the label didn't quite take off the way X1 expected so he then went and signed a new deal with California record company "BALL'R REC." which had a roster consisting of three acts: Krazy Bone, The Relatives, and X1. He soon ran into creative differences and left the label. So here he is now blazing hot, more focused then ever, and ready to give the world what they have been missing.

PREACH MARTIN HUSTLES HIS FLOW

Richmond, CA August 8, 2005 -- "You know its hard out here for a pimp when he tryna get this money for the rent."

The now-famous & half-way comical chorus from the movie Hustle & Flow rings throughout the theatre, followed by echoes of laughter. But one Bay Area MC knows a pimps hustle aint no joke.

Preach Martin (pronounced Mar-teen) was born a hustler. Before he realized he could flow, hustling was all he knew. From sticking up unsuspecting citizens to money laundering to plain ol pimpin and panderin, Preach has done it all. These real life experiences and a go-getter attitude inspired him as a novice rapper to approach the owner of the now defunct Straight Hits record label. After auditioning on the spot, Preach was immediately signed to the label as one of its flagship artists.

Me coming from the streets with no buzz, just starting to rap and getting signed to a label thats unheard of. Not to mention a label that is owned by the Program Director of KMEL and KYLD. I just knew that it was gonna crack, Preach laughs.

Preachs wishful thinking proved to be untrue. A calculating perfectionist, Preach recorded songs and re-recorded songs carefully mapping out his raps and even the hooks performed by pretty young things and R&B thugs. But while he orchestrated his master plan, Straight Hits kept it moving, releasing projects by Oakland phenom Mistah F.A.B. and Filipina quartet One Vo1ce both of whom signed to the label around the same time as Preach. Although he was receiving monthly income from the label and was featured on both albums, co-writing a tune for One Vo1ce, the money was never enough. His raps reflected the life he lived and continued to lead to help support his young son. Although his album was almost completed, Preach felt like he was just keeping his head above water.

Then came the bad news. Before Straight Hits could release a project on Preach, the label shut down leaving him uncertain of what the future might hold. The opportunities garnered by Straight Hits had included radio play of his single Bad Misses, mixtape placement on the Bay Area Playas Vol. 6, write ups in Showcase Magazine, and the promise of more to come. Now facing an unknown path quite possibly without his already recorded music, Preachs focus turned back to hustling.

You know the pimp game and the rap game are similar, you gotta stay on top of your game and be prepared for anything., warns Preach. If you dont pay attention, one day youll look up and everything could be gone from under you. Your tricks, your music, your money, and your one chance. Luckily I still had my girls and other hustles, so I concentrated on that to get my money right.

After stacking his bread, Preach brokered a deal that allowed him to release the music he so painstakingly worked at. Armed with his music and money for mastering, Preach set out to find a manager. He settled with longtime associates and Bay Area entertainment fixtures Marcel Anderson and Meilani of MPRINT MUSIC.

When asked why they added Preach to their roster, Marcel and Meilani concurrently agree. Preach has the voice, the charisma and the experiences that make a rapper successful. Not to mention, his drive is amazing.

One would agree that it takes a charismatic person to persuade females to parade their goodies on the Bays city streets. And you could argue that it takes one of talent to earn two callbacks for the new Damon Dash TV show Ultimate Hustler. But what, besides unfaltering drive, could possess a person to spend his hard-earned money on an album that mightve never seen the light of day?

Mirroring the storyline of Hustle & Flow, Preach confesses, I just knew that there was something else out there for me. Something that was bigger than hustling & pimping. I didnt want to do that for the rest of my life. This album means so much to me because I did it on my own. I found all the producers, I wrote the raps, I conceived this from beginning to end. So when it drops I got this feeling people are gonna identify with me.

With a finished project entitled From A.M. to P.M., a connected management team, and steady money flowing in youd think hustling would already be a thing of Preachs past. Not so, Preach says. Everyday is a struggle and I gotta hustle my way through it. This rap game is a hustle. Just to get noticed, to get airplay, to get distribution you gotta finagle. My album is the result of hustlin. Like the title says, thats all I do from a.m. to p.m.

U God brings Xcitement to boxing

U-God and Don King team up again for match promos.

In the studio, Shu worked with some industry heavy weights as well as other rising artists.

"It was a very organic experience and I was fortunate enough to collaborate with some amazing musicians, like Myron (and producing partner Josh Honigstock) who used to work with Dru Hill back in the day, and Dave Tozer who's worked with John Legend and Snoop and Kanye (West), and J. Phila. Pa. Hip Hop Feature Filmmaker Tim Greene of The Ultimate Hip Hop Motion Picture Consortium will be a guest speaker at the Let books rule, keep guns out of school youth boot camp.

The weekend boot camps registration will be held on AUGUST 13, 2005 at 12:00pm at the New Fellowship Church located at 7001 Woodland Avenue in Philadelphia. The ages of the participants will be from 6 to 12.

Youth cannot bring: Radios, TV Walkmans, etc. Youth cannot wear long sleeve shirts and cannot wear earrings or cologne.

This time will be spent supporting the positive development of our young men and we want to have their complete attention.

I think 6 to 12 is a great age to start motivating kids to stay in school and get good grades says awarding wining filmmaker Tim Greene.

ACLU Sues School District Over Expulsion of Middle School Rapper for Lyrics

ACLU, Student and Parents to Hold Press Conference Today at 2:00 p.m.

PITTSBURGH-The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania today will file a federal lawsuit on behalf of a 14-year-old rap artist and his parents charging that the Riverside Beaver School District violated the student's First Amendment free speech rights by expelling the boy for rap music he wrote at home and posted on the Internet. A press conference with plaintiffs and ACLU attorneys will be held today at 2:00 p.m. in the ACLU's Pittsburgh office.

"School officials are not parents, and the First Amendment limits their authority to control what students read, write, rap or listen to in their own homes," said Witold Walczak, ACLU of Pennsylvania Legal Director and one of the lawyers in this case. "If this expulsion is upheld then it will effectively be illegal for Riverside Beaver District students to compose rap music, even in their own homes." Walczak noted that the student wrote and recorded the music at home, did not bring it into school, and that the principal admitted that the songs did not cause any disruption in the classroom.

The student, Anthony Latour, has been writing and playing rap music for several years. His parents bought him home recording equipment. Anthony's songs are fairly typical rap music, which include verbal challenges and "jousting" with other rappers and violent imagery. He cites as influences Eminem, DZK, Eyedia, and Necro.

While Anthony's parents are not rap devotees, they are supportive of their son. According to Anthony's father, John Latour, "My grandparents didn't like Elvis; my parents didn't like Pink Floyd; and even though rap music may not be my taste, as parents my wife and I support Anthony's artistry and passion for rap music. And it is our job, not that of school officials, to decide what music Anthony can compose and listen to in our home."

In late April of this year, Anthony was arrested for several songs he composed over the past three years under the charge that the lyrics are "terroristic threats" because they describe acts of violence. Although the juvenile court charges are still pending, the school district expelled him from school for the rest of this year and next.

The music objected to by school officials includes a two-year-old song responding to a classmate who had taunted him, a song written last fall describing a school shooting, and a rap challenge to another student who agreed to the verbal and musical joust.

The ACLU said that if school officials were concerned by the music that Anthony created outside of school, they should have raised their concerns with Anthony and his parents. Instead, said Walczak, officials went directly for the "death penalty of school discipline." To this day, no school official has addressed the issue with Anthony.

"Many people don't like or understand rap music, and some people won't like Anthony's lyrics," said Kim Watterson, a cooperating ACLU lawyer from the Pittsburgh law firm Reed Smith, who is handling the case. "But since these songs do not contain what's known in the law as 'true threats,' school officials and local police cannot make the music a crime simply because they find the lyrics offensive."

The lawsuit was filed today in U. S. District Court in Pittsburgh. Plaintiffs are Anthony and his parents, John and Denise Latour. The claims include a request that the court rule that the school's expulsion violates Anthony's First Amendment free speech rights and the parents' right to control and direct their children's upbringing. The lawsuit seeks Anthony's reinstatement to school and damages. The ACLU expects to file a motion for preliminary injunction requesting Anthony's reinstatement within the next few days. The case is Latour v. Riverside Beaver School District.

Mass Transit: The Movement of People Thru Sound - Hip-Hop for Sudanese Relief

A benefit for relief in the Sudan.

The National Hip-Hop Political Convention is planning a benefit concert
to
address the genocide occurring in Sudan, Africa. The concert, "Mass
Transit:
The Movement of People Thru Sound" will be held during the Magic
Fashion
Convention on August 29th at the University of Las Vegas campus.

The crisis in Sudan has escalated to the point of genocide, and the
NHHPC
believes something must be done to raise awareness around this issue.
This
will be the group's first time taking on a project like this, and, to
their
knowledge, a first time by a Hip-Hop organization to address an
international issue outside of the war in Iraq.

To put this event on, the NHHPC has partnered with Phi Beta Sigma (Pi

The Hip-Hop Association Acquires VERBALISMS Magazine

Non-Profit to Add Bourgeoning Property to Its Expanding Media Initiative

New York, NY The Hip-Hop Association (H2A) has acquired VERBALISMS Magazine, the quarterly glossy print publication dedicated to women in Hip-Hop culture. The magazine acquisition, finalized in July of this year, was a first for H2A says Rolando Brown, Director of Brand Development. With VERBALISMS weve gained an additional opportunity to continue working directly with a group of our most important community members. Its with great pleasure that we support bringing balance to the culture so that we may successfully create positive ways to utilize its power.

Over the last three years H2A has been responsible for a series of community building, media, and education initiatives, including producing the internationally renowned H2O [Hip-Hop Odyssey] International Film Festival and the highly successful H2Ed [Hip-Hop Education] Summit. In 2004 alone both events garnered the support of over 5,000 Hip-Hop community members, including 144 varied educational organizations, and over 100 video/filmmakers.

VERBALISMS began as a monthly e-zine in 2002 and made its print debut in spring 2005 subsequent to an overwhelming international online readership. The magazine will move its offices from Chicago, IL to New York City, while its editor-in-chief and founder, Raquel Wilson, joins H2A as Director of Marketing and Retail Merchandising.

What H2A does to redirect Hip-Hop is in direct correlation to VERBALISMS mission, so moving under the umbrella of the Hip-Hop Association was a natural partnership, says Wilson.

The online edition of VERBALISMS will continue to be updated monthly while a new print edition is being readied for spring 2006.

New Online Music Community Makes Splash in the Indie Scene

Struggling musicians make a break for online success by creating a cutting-edge community for artists.
