Eclectic indie rapper--emcee Hype--releases solo EP, apathy irony agony infinity, an intelligent rap record about hope?
Album summary, sample lyrics, and information on debut solo release from eclectic indie rapper, emcee hype. How can an album called, "Apathy Irony Agony Infinity" be so hopeful? Think "Shawshank Redemption" for hip hop heads.
New Jersey & Pennsylvania (PRWEB) February 2, 2006 -- Eclectic indie rapper, Emcee Hype, returns to the mic with his debut solo EP, Apathy Irony Agony Infinity. This explosive and intelligent EP marks hypes first solo work since his demo tapes in the late 90s. Four LPs from two different rap groups, and several collaborations, span the six years since.
This EP also marks the first time that all of the production and beats were done by Hype. The rapper gathered all of his samples, produced all of the beats on the album, and performed all of the accompaniments: keys, guitars, and turntables.
Apathy Irony Agony Infinity is a fire-cracker-blast of an EP. With no intro track, the album explodes onto the listeners eardrums with the jazz-savvy opener, summer in the city. The album then spans seven tracks and twenty-one minutes worth of non-stop flows, gritty hip hop and unadulterated heart-on-my-sleeve emotion.
On his tongue-in-cheek, youre crazy too, Hype snarls, And its onmy heart on my sleeve on a song A few lines later he revises the former, adding, Im sick? Im only regrettin that shed leave, so I tore up the heart and wore a hole on my sleeve.
Hypes wordplay is dazzling. His machine-gun delivery and dictionary-dense lyrics rattle the mind in your bobbing head, while he paints the canvas of his tracks like a mic-wielding Jackson Pollock.
Its our personal, serpigo, terminal, final descent and if you cycle all the circles to the surface youll know what I meant. You follow through the hollow any way you wantits isotropicIll be waitin by the tree of empty bottles, vice in pocket. (Lyrics, please dont feed the machine)
Hype addresses politics and class on the Bradbury-inspired, burn em to ashes then burn the ashes. Other, more subtle political and social commentaries peer out from behind metaphors and dance in the shadows of the subtext throughout various songs.
Fashion is in and its clearly not the clever that win, its the Beverly-born-into-this-belly-T. (Lyrics, the world on a string)
Apathy Irony Agony Infinity is a collection of snapshots from inside of Hypes mind. He gives you the shattered pieces on each songdaring you to put them back togetheras he ravishes through memories and insights, pits the collective against the individual, and recounts love and loss. The album is dark and brooding, the tracks are eclectic, but the unifying theme is one of hope.
Think Shawshank Redemption for hip hop heads.
On the track youre crazy too Hype tackles depression, and paints a grim picture of his own sick psyche, but hope prevails in the chorus: just put the past on the other side of the river, push the button, blow the bridge in two.
The melodic we all bleed red is an anthem for humanity. Lines like, Vanity vanished the moment I noticed the notion that nothing is normal but people and oceans and mountains and space careen back to the refrain, it seems that were different but listen, he said, we all bleed red.
Apathy Irony Agony Infinity is not just a tight hip hop record; its good music with appeal that transcends genre lines. In spite of the title, this EP has an element rap could really use these days: hope.
