Masai Bey Bio

In 1999 Masai Bey made his lyrical production and scratching debut simultaneously on a 12inch, alongside Cage and Space titled Paranoid Android, released in Englanc on DC Records. This would be the beginning of The Weathermen, which was at the time a production duo consisting of Masai and Cage.

By the end of that same year Masai contributed co-production (Weathermen) for a Cage single on Bobbito's Fondle 'em label and lyrics, including the hook, on a Smut Peddlers song titled "For The Record" on Rawkus Records.

In 2000, Masai was advised by Cage to give El -P (Company Flow) a call about possibly recording some material. After months of contemplating and meditating Masai decided to give El-P a call, which led to
Masai Bey's contribution to the Weathermen's, by this time a lyricist collective, debut song "Same As It Never Was" (2001) and his solo debut song "Paper Mache" (2001) on "Definitive Jux presents II".

In 2002, Definitive Jux rereleased "Paper Mache" as a single with two additional songs titled "Nonstop", produced by Masai Bey and "The Beginning" produced by El-P featuring BMS and Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox). During this period, Masai spent his days writing, creating music and recording in a studio owned by BMS.

In 2003, Masai Bey and BMS released an "out-of-the-trunk" split 12 inch single "Innersection (BMS)/Rapavenge(Masai Bey)".

By August 2004, Masai had finished his limited "Masai Bey's Goldmind" released independently. This "out-the-trunk" cd was greeted with a very positive response causing anticipation for a full length album with "real" distribution. This goal was met with the completion of Masai's debut 14 song full length album "Natural Magic Music" on Raptivism Records. With over 20 years of writing rhymes on his belt and over 15 years of "mic experience", Masai Bey has performed on many stages from NY to NJ, Penn., Ct., RI, DC, and has shared stages with Company Flow, Cannibal Ox, Cage, El Da Sensai, Immortal Technique, Kice, Mr. Lif, C-Rayz, L.I.F.E. New Structure Enhances Music Network's Ability to Develop and Deliver Dynamic Content for Audiences Across All Screens

Moving forward, the music, production and news groups will represent one ecosystem which will be led by Dave Sirulnick in his new role as Executive Vice President, MTV Multiplatform Production, News and Music, formerly Executive Vice President, News & Production. Sirulnick will connect the three worlds together, streamlining and overseeing the creation of music and short form content for the various platforms under the MTV brand. Under this new structure, Doyle, DiBari and MacAdams will report into Sirulnick. Sirulnick will continue to report into Graden.

Partnering with Sirulnick will be Ben White, Vice President, Digital Media, along with all the great digital talent, Jason Hirschhorn, MTVN Chief Digital Officer, has brought to the table. Recently, MTV's content has extended further into the wireless space with new partners such as Amp'd and Verizon Wireless.

In broadband, Ben and his team's leadership in the development of MTV Overdrive were essential and since launch, have overseen an increase of more than 826% in video streams. He and his team have also transformed MTV.com into an immersive entertainment experience that not only compliments on-air programming but has unique content created solely for the web. Ben will report to Sirulnick on content.

While Sirulnick's team is focused on music, short form content, news and new platforms, a parallel team will be solely dedicated to propelling the already thriving linear television business with half-hour and one-hour hits, primarily for MTV's 10 Spot and afternoons. Lois Curren, in her new role as Executive Vice President, MTV Series Entertainment and Programming and the person behind such groundbreaking series as "The Osbournes," "Newlyweds," "Punk'd" and "Meet the Barkers" will now be charged with all long-form television development and programming for MTV. Previously Curren, as EVP, Series Development, had overseen West Coast TV development only. Many of the shows under Curren's auspices have been among the highest rated series in channel history, and much of MTV's recent ratings success can be directly linked to her continuous string of white hot hits that have dominated the water cooler buzz. Tony DiSanto, formerly Senior Vice President, Production, Development & Animation, has now been promoted to Executive Vice President, Series Development & Animation. In addition to continuing to create long form series for MTV, DiSanto will expand his responsibilities to become Head of Programming for MTV2. Senior Vice President, Programming for MTV2, Carol Eng, who has been managing MTV2's amazing evolution to date, will now report into DiSanto. DeBenedittis will be responsible for strategically programming and scheduling MTV's short-form and long-form content on the appropriate platform. Sam Goody or Sam Baddy? Supporting the Sale of Pirated Music

DALLAS, TX: Producer DAWGS DABATO and Blacklight Management are currently in a copyright dispute with the late recording artist Johnnie Taylor's grandson VERSE (Calvin Arterberry). VERSE recently released an unauthorized album, in Dallas area music retail stores, that was produced and recorded by Dawgs Dabato. The unauthorized album was released prior to the clearance of rights to use the copyrighted musical compositions for commercial release.

Dawgs Dabato's management is in the process of contacting all retail stores involved in selling the product. This includes stores such as Sam Goody at Town East Mall who has refused to cooperate with the request to pull the CD's from their retail shelves until the copyrighted music is properly licensed. To date, the retailer continues to sell the unlicensed music.

Founder and CEO of Blacklight Management and member of The Recording Academy (NARAS) Sheryl V. Glenn said, "I am optimistic that we will resolve this issue quickly through cooperation from the music retail chains and manufacturers without further attention from our counsel. Our priority is to protect our client Dawgs Dabato's musical compositions. If his music isn't paid for then it won't be sold in stores. We respect Verse as an artist but he clearly doesn't understand the business of making music. Dawgs Dabato reserves all the rights to his music exclusively and without his consent its blatant copyright infringement."

SONY BMG Film Partners with Nuyorican Productions on Inaugural Feature Film Project, 'Reggaeton,' from a Screenplay by Albert Leon

Production Tentatively Slated for Spring 2006

NEW YORK, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT today announced that the company has acquired all rights to "Reggaeton," an original screenplay written by Albert Leon, and plans to produce the project, in conjunction with Jennifer Lopez's Nuyorican Productions, through the recently launched SONY BMG Film.

"Reggaeton," SONY BMG Film's first feature, will be produced by Jennifer Lopez and Simon Fields for Nuyorican Productions and by Sofia Sondervan on behalf of SONY BMG Film.

Pic will be shot on location in New York and Puerto Rico with production expected to commence in Spring 2006.

"Reggaeton" is the story of Rob, a talented 21-year-old from the South Bronx whose dreams of hip-hop stardom are dashed when a run-in with local thugs makes him flee the city to hide in Puerto Rico with the father he never knew. There he finds love with a street-savvy local girl, CC, and discovers a new genre of music, a mix of hip-hop and reggae. The locals call it Reggaeton. Rob partners with his half brother, a DJ, and together they make groundbreaking strides and are poised to become Reggaeton stars. But, when a corrupt music producer "discovers" Rob and offers him a record deal that brings him and CC back to New York, a new conflict threatens his romance and his budding career.

"'Reggaeton' is one of the most original scripts we've come across since we launched this division," said Sofia Sondervan. "We expect it will attract a top-notch director and cast."

Music Industry 'Payola' Settlement Leads to Music Funding Opportunities

$15 million earmarked for music education and appreciation programs in New York State; Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors accepting grant applications for The New York State Music Fund

NEW YORK, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors today launched a new grant program by releasing a Request for Applications for the New York State Music Fund ("Music Fund"). This program is funded by settlements reached by the Office of the New York State Attorney General and will make contemporary music of all genres more accessible to diverse audiences and communities within New York State. Grants from the Music Fund, which currently holds $15 million, will be disbursed to nonprofit organizations associated with music education and appreciation efforts.

The Music Fund was created when the New York State Attorney General's Office resolved investigations against major record companies that had violated state and federal laws prohibiting "pay for play" (also called "payola"). The settlement agreement stipulated that funds paid by music businesses would support music education and appreciation for the benefit of New York State residents. The Attorney General's Office enlisted the services of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors to develop and manage the grant program. Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, a nonprofit organization, is one of the nation's largest and most experienced philanthropy services and has developed or facilitated more than $850 million in giving over the past decade.

"This is a creative vehicle through which grants to well-established nonprofits will enable people from all across New York State, from all walks of life, to experience the joy of music," said Melissa Berman, President and CEO of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. "We're excited about our role in helping people of all ages discover emerging artists, sample music genres new to them or perhaps learn to play an instrument."

Grant applications from nonprofit organizations are due by March 31st; awards and a second round of requests for applications will be announced in June, 2006. For the purposes of the Music Fund, "contemporary music" encompasses written composition and performance of all genres, including classical, jazz, music from around the world that is based in living classical or folk traditions, experimental music, and noncommercial forms of popular music including alternative rock, country, hip hop, and others. Proposed programs can include a range of activities from any or all of the following categories:

* Creation of diverse new works of music by emerging or established
composers, musicians, ensembles, or bands;
* Live Performance of diverse forms of music being created by today's
emerging to established composers, musicians, ensembles, or bands;
* Media -- recording/distribution/broadcast through traditional or new
media of diverse works created by today's composers and musicians
(Particular emphasis will be placed on use of noncommercial media
vehicles); and
* Music Education -- School and community-based music activities and
programs provided by cultural organizations that promote skill-building
in, and understanding and appreciation of, music of our time.

Special emphasis of the Music Fund will be on reaching underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience a variety of music have been limited by socioeconomic status, ethnicity, geography or disability -- and broadening awareness of underrepresented music -- artists, genres or styles with limited access to commercial broadcast or other mass distribution vehicles.

Funded activities must take place in New York State and benefit New York State residents. Generally, funded projects are to be completed within a one-year period, but a limited number of two-year grants will be awarded. Further, the Music Fund will also consider from nonprofit organizations a limited number of special initiative proposals that address the music field's ability to monitor and maintain an open and fair marketplace for the production and distribution of music in New York State. Grant proposals will be evaluated by an Advisory Review Panel knowledgeable about the range of music proposed and communities throughout New York State.
