Hip Hop Press Update: Newsletter & Layout

I'm experimenting with FeedBlitz for my newsletter delivery. It's now the first option in the left column. So, if you've been having trouble getting the Bloglet newsletter or want to help my try something new, please subscribe to Hip Hop Press via the FeedBlitz box on the left.

I've discovered that the layout for Hip Hop Press in Firefox for Mac OS X is all screwed up and that the box to add your email address forces the left hand column's contents down the page to below the level of the main column's text. If you're having that problem, I'm sorry. I'm experimenting with the layout but my efforts so far have encountered odd obstacles.

A: These are the artists that me and Papa Chuck groomed and put together and as you can tell they are seasoned pro's .

Full Sail Graduates Participate in a Record Number of Nominated Projects at the 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards

110 Graduates Worked on GRAMMY-Nominated Projects in 66 Separate Categories, Including Graduates Phil Tan and Andrew Coleman, Both Nominated for Album and Record of the Year

Late Rap Star to Introduce New 'On Stage' Attraction

LAS VEGAS, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Madame Tussauds Las Vegas will immortalize the late rap music star Tupac Shakur on April 5 when it opens its new "On Stage" attraction.

The now iconic image of a shirtless Tupac sporting a bandana and displaying his tattoos will join with Prince, Bono, Mick Jagger, Elton John, James Brown, Little Richard, Billy Idol, Elvis and a number other super stars to celebrate the diversity of music.

Queen Latifah Pays Tribute to Five National Finalists of National Women's Confidence Awards

Finalists Surprised with News in Hometowns Via 'Confidence Caravan'

She also founded Girl Talk, designed to motivate, empower, uplift, build self-esteem and teach leadership skills to teenage girls.

The woman who nominated her, Phyllis Lawson, who has known Lorraine for nearly 30 years, says of her: "Being a single parent hasn't been easy... even when she didn't have money for her family's needs... she still reached out to those less fortunate." "mtvU FRESHMEN FIVE" -- College students are the prophets of new music, and starting this semester, the "mtvU Freshman Five" will bi-annually pick the five emerging artists poised to ride on students' shoulders to superstardom. "BREAKING THE VIDEO" -- mtvU has greenlit the new series "Breaking the Video," which features O.A.R. and Damone this semester, and gives college students the chance to produce and direct music videos for hot emerging acts. Artists choose the winning concept for the video and travel to campus for the shoot. Each video -- along with a special behind-the-scenes "making of" -- premieres exclusively on mtvU and mtvU Uber. Episode one features college favorite O.A.R., produced by students at Columbia University. Episode two features students from Brooklyn College creating a video for breakout artist Damone. "mtvU EXCLUSIVE LIVE LEAK" -- Rising reggae star Matisyahu got his start on mtvU nearly a year ago, and now he's back to take over the channel, with an on-air, online, and wireless exclusive first look-and-listen of his debut studio album, "Youth." In the seven days running up to the album's release this March, mtvU Uber will each day premiere an exclusive live performance of a new song from the record. The day "Youth" drops, performances from the "Live Leak" will air every half hour on mtvU, while the album streams in its entirety on mtvU.com and as a wireless download for digital phones. "STAND IN" -- A new roster of global icons will surprise college campuses this spring and serve as "Stand In" professors for a day. With mtvU cameras following, each will visit an mtvU affiliate school to guest teach an unsuspecting class. Additionally, in March, MTV will air a half hour special highlighting some of the best moments from the acclaimed mtvU series, which has shocked college students with Stand Ins including Nobel Laureate Shimon Peres, Madonna, Senator John McCain, Marilyn Manson, Tom Wolfe, Sting and Kanye West.

"DARFUR GENOCIDE ACTIVISM VIDEO GAME" -- In partnership with the Reebok Human Rights Foundation, mtvU today unveiled the three finalists in its Darfur Digital Activist competition. Developed by students from Carnegie Mellon, U.S.C. and the DigiPen Institute of Technology, the online video games are designed to spread awareness of the genocide taking place in the Darfur region of Sudan and further mobilize college students to help stop the crisis. Third Annual Groovevolt Music Awards Winners Announced

Too many awards are judged by people in the music industry whose motives are politically oriented, Jackson said. More than 700,000 votes were cast by fans who were interested in voting for their favorite music. Award winning artists like Carey, Fiona Apple, Rob Thomas and Toni Braxton proved that listeners still believe in artistry by respecting their longevity."

Nominees were chosen from artists whose albums were released from September 1, 2004 to September 30, 2005. Singles released during that time period were eligible, even if the albums from which the song came were not yet released.

While the voting for the Groovevolt Music and Fashion Awards has ended, music fans still have the chance to register for the chance to win 125 full albums from the nominated artists. The sweepstakes, which began January 17 and wraps February 15, will award 125 audio CDs from the 125 artists who were nominated for GV Awards this year, as well as a video iPod and a t-shirt from the site where the winner entered the contest. One runner up will win an iPod shuffle.

A powerful collaboration is born that aims to help teachers bring Hip-Hop into the classroom with the 2006 Summer Teacher Institute

NEW YORK, NY (Jan 31, 2006) - As part of an ongoing mission to educate on the cultural significance of Hip-Hop and showcase its power to facilitate multidisciplinary learning both in and outside of the classroom, the Hip-Hop Association is pleased to announce that it will join forces with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to present the Museums 2006 Summer Teacher Institute, Elevate!: Using Hip-Hop To Educate.

Scheduled to take place from June 26 30, 2006, the Summer Teacher Institute brings K-12 teachers together with arts education specialists, activists, historians, curriculum designers, and performers to learn how to utilize Hip-Hop as a tool to educate, inform and empower todays youth. In addition to working with The Hip-Hop Association, the Museum presents the Summer Institute in collaboration with Cuyahoga Community College and the Center for the Study of the Arts at Cleveland State University.

Shortly after the Museum's opening, the Rock Hall Education Department designed the Institute to introduce teachers to the history, sounds and communities of rock and roll music. Educators who have innovated in the area of popular music studies have shared their expertise, presenting a variety of successful applications of rock and roll music, its roots, and its branches in the K-12 learning environment. Through the study of such models, teachers identify ways to use music to deepen their own students engagement with language arts, geography, history, social studies, music, and beyond.

This year, the Summer Teacher Institute will provide a forum for the most cutting-edge discussions about popular music, art and culture in the classroom using resources from both the Museum and the Hip-Hop Association, including curriculum models from the Museums award-winning Rockin the Schools program and innovative programming drawn from the Hip-Hop Association's annual Hip-Hop Education Summits. The education and activist communities have truly appreciated our Hip-Hop Education Summits. They have provided the opportunity to learn and share about Hip-Hop and its legacy of empowerment. The Summer Teacher Institute is a great occasion to bring this dialogue to a larger platform. Were excited to be in a position to aid in this process, says Martha Diaz, President of the Hip-Hop Association.

The program:
Projected to bring together national and local teachers, organizers, parents, educators, social workers, scholars, and organizations, the program is a forum dedicated to connecting Hip-Hop culture with educational curriculums. Past participants in the Summit have included Bakari Kitwana, Raqiyah Mays, Selwyn Hinds, Toni Blackman, Hank Shocklee and Dr. Roxanne Shante.

From 8:30am to 5:30pm daily, teachers will interact with internationally noted authors and researchers, nationally recognized educators, and arts education specialists. Scholars at the vanguard of popular music studies who make teaching a priority in their work will lead the way. Representatives of the Hip-Hop Association, local arts education institutions such as Progressive Arts Alliance, and the Music Department of Cuyahoga Community College will discuss their efforts to bring popular music and culture into educational settings.

A team of full-time teachers who have successfully used Hip- Hop to teach critical thinking skills, language arts and communications, social sciences, music, and computer technology will join Rock Hall education Vice President Warren Zanes and programs managers Susan Oehler and Jason Hanley in leading small-group workshops. In a format that encourages participants to share their own experiences, explore instructional issues, and begin to tailor plans for their own classroom work, the workshops will showcase interdisciplinary lessons, units, and resources.

After playing in separate groups, they finally decided to work together on a common project and are now enjoying their new found success with Zur. Its all happened so quickly says Zuri I cant quite believe it when I see our Cd in the shops.

Angel laughingly jokes about their future fame, although the group acknowledge that this would indeed provide a platform from which to get their message across. They both agree that it would be a fantastic opportunity to positively influence younger generations and voice the thoughts and beliefs of many.

Having just completed their first tour of Southern Spain and with a Cd already in the shops, Zur have big plans for the next couple of years. Hoping to be able to reach other Hispanic speaking countries in the not so distant future, Angel eagerly took the opportunity to express his desire to travel and see the world.

Marbella close to their hearts, however, they vowed that they have no plans to leave.

Everyone who becomes famous leaves, we are quite happy where we are, says Zuri. We are not interested in living in Madrid. Being on the road is fun but tiring, its nice to come back to Marbella, its home.

Pugs Atomz Bio

He is Pugs Atomz, a dedicated member of Chicagos extraordinary Hip Hop scene. Since the early 90s Pugs has been out and about Chi City as a fan , graffiti artist, battle rapper, freestyler, party thrower, promoter, Radio/TV personality and the list goes on.

He came up the ranks in the traditional way, earning props from corner ciphers at places like The Point (south side gathering place for teenagers hungry for hip hop in the mid 90s) and Navy Pier.

1993 was the year he started a collective called the Nacrobats with far too many members to list but a legacy of artists making a name for themselves in their respected fields. With the strength of the collective, Five albums were made, numerous parties and battles were had and it pushed Pugs to take his music and art more serious.

His first solo album was Thanks For Not Rhyming on Galapagos4 Records. It boasted production from the Molemen, Meatyogre, Polyphonic and others, receiving a warm response from the underground.

The nineteen track album 24 Years Later followed, released on his own co-founded label Birthwrite Records with production handled by Yoda, PNS, Flesh O.N.E. and others. This album has taken Pugslee touring all over the United States, Germany, Paris, Amsterdam and London, on the bill with the likes of De La Soul, Nas, Talib Kweli, Cypress Hill, MF doom, RZA, El-P, Atmosphere, El the Sensei and a host of others.

Hip Hop Canada says Pugslee is most notoriously known for his clever wordplay and hungry delivery... [He] is the type of emcee you discover then slap yourself upside the head for sleeping on over the years... guaranteed to sooth the listeners ears.

In the summer of 2004, Pugslee teamed up with Audio 8 Recordings to release his third album Playing With Matches, a tale of the trials and tribulations of a Chicago tagger in the 90s and featured appearances by Seel Fresh IBC, Binkus, DJ Intel, and commentary from some of Chicagos top graffiti artist.

Currently He has just finished a compilation for Raptivism Records entitled Pugs Atomz presents CTA Radio Chi City Hip Hop. This cd is basically an exerpt of the Cta Radio show, he has been a part of every Wednesday night from 9-12am for the last six years. This is a definite must to any body digging the Chicago sound. Houston Pavilions Project

One Hunnid is the introductory effort from Faces new company _ The Underground Railroad Movement _ and is the result of an alliance hes formed with two of the most talented artists that the mainstream hip-hop world has yet to hear of: Bay Area rap veteran Will Hen and Jackson, Mississippi native Young Malice. Wil Hen has been developing his skills with Scarfaces twin ear producer Tone Capone and his street credibility is built from his unique Bay Area flow coupled with his real life tales of being a street pimp. Complementing Wil Hens West Coast flava is a voice from the South, Young Malice. Young Malice proved to have the raw Southern style that Scarface recognized as one of the most promising voices of the hood. KING OF QUEENS 'Clockers' Actor, Hip-Hop Activist Honor 'Greatest DJ of All Time'

Queens/Toronto -- Rap legend and acclaimed actor
Sticky Fingaz has recorded a new radio PSA with
Canadian music personality Raoul Juneja (a.k.a. Deejay
Ra), commemorating what would have been the 41st
birthday of the hip-hop founder responsible for
Sticky's big break - Jam Master Jay.

The 'JMJ' tribute PSA was recorded for Deejay Ra's
'Hip-Hop Literacy' campaign to encourage reading of
Jam Master Jay's "Heart of Hip-Hop" biography book
amongst students, in the hopes more youth will
continue learning about the 'greatest DJ of all time'
known as Jazon Mizell to close friends Joseph 'Run'
Simmons and Daryl 'DMC' McDaniels, with whom Mizell
formed a mid 80's music group which would soon after
spread a new art called hip-hop around the world.

Run-DMC were responsible for rap's first top-ten
single, multi-platinum album and music video on MTV,
not to mention their personal accolades of the first
emcees to receive a Grammy nomination, be on the cover
of Rolling Stone and act in their own feature film, as
well as Run-DMC signing the first known shoe deal
designed specifically for non-athletes.

Sticky Fingaz, whose rap group Onyx with Fredro Starr
and Sonee Seeza has often been described as a harsher
version of Run-DMC, credits Onyx signing to Jason
Mizell's 'JMJ' Records in 1991 as the jump-off for
their now 15 years in the hip-hop game and over 10
years of movie roles.

The critically praised appearance of Sticky and Fredro
