SPEED Channel Renews Lifestyle Shows Unique Whips, Build or Bust

Pinks, Texas Hardtails Debut Next Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 2005--SPEED Channel VP of Programming Robert Ecker announced today the network has renewed both Unique Whips and Build or Bust for second seasons.

"We are extremely pleased that both Unique Whips and Build or Bust will be returning to the SPEED lineup with all-new episodes beginning next spring," Ecker said. "Audience response to these enthusiast-themed programs has been very gratifying, and with the impending launch of both Pinks (June 29, 8 p.m. ET) and Texas Hardtails (June 28, 8:30 p.m. ET) we continue to affirm our commitment to this segment of our viewership. Looking ahead, we currently are identifying additional properties for future seasons that will further bolster the SPEED brand within this category."

Unique Whips (Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET), shot on location at the New York celebrity car customizing shop of Will Castro, featured season-one appearances by A-list athletes and entertainers, including tennis great Jennifer Capriati, NY Yankees sluggers Jason Giambi and Ruben Sierra, NBA stars Carmelo Anthony, Marcus Camby and Jermaine O'Neal, NFL standouts Lavar Arrington and Byron Leftwich and hip-hop artists Jadakiss and Fat Joe.

"Season one was a hell of an experience -- I didn't realize what kind of impact the show would have on the industry," said Castro, owner of Long Island's Unique Autosports. "But getting out there on SPEED took our work mainstream and introduced our style and our crew to the entire country.

"We were a little nervous about putting our business out there in season one, but I think the entire crew is looking forward to season two," Castro added. "The SPEED viewers are going to see a lot more of the Unique craftsmanship that goes into celebrity cars. I think everyone, including our clients, will be a lot more comfortable with the cameras around and by the end of season two, there will be no doubt as to why Unique stands head and shoulders above some of the other customizing shops."

The 12 new Unique Whips episodes planned for season two will give viewers a look at even more stars and their Unique cars, with plans to include appearances by entertainers Jessica Simpson, Pamela Anderson and Busta Rhymes and NBA standout Vince Carter.

Build or Bust, created and produced by A Band Apart's Scott Gillen, also was given the green light on 11 new episodes to begin next spring. The one-hour show takes an average person with an interest in designing and building his or her own motorcycle, matches them up with a renowned master builder and gives them 30 days to build a bike from the ground up. If the job is completed to the master builder's satisfaction within the allotted time, they get to keep the bike. If not, they walk away bruised and empty-handed.

Beginning June 28, Build or Bust moves to Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET, strategically positioning it with SPEED Channel's other motorcycle enthusiast fare, including 2 Wheel Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET), American Thunder (8 p.m. ET) and the first season of Texas Hardtails (8:30 p.m. ET).

"I am thrilled by the show's success and excited about our plans for a second season on SPEED," Gillen said. "Build or Bust is sometimes raw, sometimes a little harsh, but that's because it's real -- and that's why people love the show. In the new season, we plan to introduce Build or Bust's very own shop that will feature everything a custom motorcycle builder might need to create the bike of his or her dreams. We look forward to a long run."

Exile Cycles master builder Russell Mitchell, who starred in most of the season-one episodes, plans to return for season two.

"The first season of Build or Bust was a lot of fun," Mitchell said. "I had a great time working with the wide array of interesting characters who participated. I particularly enjoyed watching their efforts to do in 30 days what it has taken me a lifetime to learn."

Believe the Hype: Hip Hop Is Back On the Boston Scene With the Opening of The Store

A true rags to riches story of Northeastern University graduate Adam Walder, whose passion for underground hip hop morphed from a dorm room hobby into the profitable internet music mail order business of Walder is now taking that business to the next level by opening a physical retail store backed with a revolutionary retail purchasing concept which blurs the lines of online vs. brick and mortar shopping experiences. The flagship location of The Store is sure to bring back the love of the underground in a city not traditionally known for its hip hop roots.

(PRWEB) June 23, 2005 -- From 50 visitors a day to over 30,000 a day, from 40 music titles to over 8400 titles, from a small dorm room to a 2500 sq ft. office/retail and still growing; is a true entrepreneur success story of passion that really does pay the bills.

From the beginning, Adam Walder was always a fan of the underground hip hop scene. Whether he was managing a mix tape store at the age of 15 or being a 16 year old assistant hip hop DJ at Rutgers University in his home state of New Jersey, he always dreamed of owning his own music store that would promote the music and culture that he loved so much.

While Walder took a round about route in realizing his dream by starting a successful online music retail venture ( out of his Northeastern University dorm room in 1997, his initial dream of owning a brick and mortar retail store is now becoming a reality with the opening of The Store located at 234 Huntington Avenue in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts.

This 2500 sq. ft. space, with 800 square feet of it being turned into a retail store dedicated underground hip hop music and culture, with the additional 1700 sq. ft. remaining as office space for the internet operations, will sell over 8400 titles of underground hip hop CDs, vinyl records, DVDs and clothing. How do you sell over 8400 titles of independent hip hop artists music in only 800 sq ft. of retail space? This is where Walder works his magic with out of the box thinking and merging of traditional processes with the latest technologies which will help create a whole new experience of purchasing music in a physical retail setting.

The website of has successfully grown into a thriving business due to its focus on three aspects of the underground hip hop genre; Providing entertainment via streaming audio by allowing customers to listen to a minimum of one minute all the way up to the full length of a song before purchasing, by creating a community via the online forums and chat rooms which connect thousands of hip hop heads from all over the world, and finally offering the music of un-signed (as well as label-signed artists) to visitors for purchase. These three aspects coupled with a massive music selection and the highest standards of customer service, have propelled into one of the most visited online sources in the underground hip hop industry. So how was Walder to translate these online aspects into a physical retail store setting without losing the identity of what made so inviting in the first place? His answer to this and other pressing retail concerns was simple keep the inner workings of the online purchasing technology intact and build the traditional retail store environment around it.

Walder plans to set up computer terminals within the store which would allow customers to come in, easily search through and view details on the 8400 items carried, listen to the music, place their order via the computer terminal and then proceed up to the register to pick up and purchase their requested items. With the traditional retail environment remaining intact with new releases and top sellers being on display, an apparel section and a small lounge area reserved for customers to relax and discuss the happenings of the hip hop community, this is a new concept that is sure to take the music retail industry by storm.

Similar to the book picking system at the Boston Public library, where the majority of the book stacks can only be accessed by an employee of the library to retrieve books for the customer, this in-store, online purchasing concept is beneficial to the retail sector in numerous ways. Inventory issues that are consistently plaguing the music retail industry including misplaced or damaged items and theft will no longer eat up profits. Also, since the majority of stock is stored in back within an office structured environment, significantly less up-front retail space is necessary to housing addition, the likeliness of closing a sale is increased because a customer can listen to any and every song in an extended 1 minute to full length sample before making a purchase.

While some of the larger music retail franchises have taken a step in a similar direction with music listening stations and scanners, their limited 30 second snippets combined with a bogged down search system creates frustration and risk in the music purchase process. Staying true to the underground way of doing things, refuses to bend and follow the traditional retail store structure. Instead, they have taken what they know works and are bending the rules of the retail industry to work within the context of new Internet and music technologies that have made the company what it is today.

Walders persistence and passion were able to pay the bills, but will they be able to bend an entire music retail industry? Come by the new store location to find out.

Anticipated opening date for The Store is May 15th located at 234 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115.

(PRWEB) June 23, 2005 -- I asked them what does DAC Squad mean? They all give me different answers. I wll not repeat them at this time. These young men have been together for over eight years, and many of them are blood consins. Yes they do have much to bring to the Hip Hop World.

They did tell me that this group has sixteen members, here are four of them that wanted to sign with Bridge Entertainment and open the doors for the rest of the DAC Squad's Family: Lord Zeus, LyRic, Relly Rell, Tee Nutty.

Lord Zeus BKA Micheal Grimes, has a strong voice and brings the power needed to move the whole crowd.

LyRic BKA David Freeman, with knowledge of self, he brings truth to his lyrics with his eyes wide open.

Relly Rell BKA Durell Holloway, a laid back smooth style, he's like a young LL Kool J in the 80's.

Tee Nutty BKA Tyrone Harris, Pain and Hardship motives this young men, by writting he releases the pain inside.

Born 2 Spit is a mixture of all their talent with some help from other artists, bring a album to the hip hop that's "Real". This CD has 12 song this just "Hot" and will keep you moving you head.

"Young BallerZ" is a powerful song that just rip it. "The Warning" is just that a warning to the Hip Hop world that they are next.

And "Bump that Shit" is a true club banger. and the Radio cut of "Bump that Shaaaa" is even better then the uncut, when have you known that a cut vers, was hotter then the uncut? In those boys from Japan are rippin it too on "U Better Back Up" and "Karate Flow".

I asked about the album cover, and they just said the birth of a family starts with one baby at a time. And the DAC Squad is one body and soul with a mic.

Many of the ladies just fell in love with the guys from their pictures on the sites. And when they are on stage the house goes crazy for him. If you don't know just visited and look them up in the chat room or on their page. To top it off, they write back to their fans too.

They have showcase at the world famous Apollo Theater, Detroit Cobo Center and in Japan these young men are going places, but now it's time for them to stop making Mix Tapes and create their own music.

They have much love for the Hip Hop world and Respect for the World. Show your support by calling your radio stations and dance clubs DJ and request them to play DAC Squad. Wear their T-Shirts, attend their showcases, and even book them for showcases and appearances. These are few ways You can help. Thank You Again:)

This Detroit base group has increased their knowledge and leadership skills for the better with some help from a former US Marine and Navy member Tyrone Bridgeforth. Tyrone is the owner and founder of Bridge Entertainment.

These young men have seen many things, just note that success has not been one. so we wish them all the best and success.
But you can request to hear any of their song on the radio in Detroit at 105.9 JamZ Request Line: (313)298-1059, and WJLB 98 FM Request Line: 313-298-7098 and if your radio station doesn`t have a copy they can send a request to Mr. Bridgeforth at: e-mail protected from spam bots.

West Coast Rap Author Teams Up with DJ Mike Relm and Balance on CD to Accompany Book "Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion"

Critically Acclaimed Lyrical Swords Author Tells the World "Be down now, or bow down later!"

San Jose, CA, June 22, 2005: YinSumi Press, the world's first publishing house dedicated to documenting the social and political trends in the Hip Hop subculture, is proud to announce that author Adisa Banjoko, DJ Mike Relm and Balance will release a powerful CD to accompany the book "Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion". The book and CD will drop Oct., 1st, 2005 on YinSumi Press.

You can listen to a sample MP3 of Adisa Banjoko's Harvard lecture on Islam, Hip Hop and Black America featuring Balance w/various beats and blends by DJ Relm at Adisa's blog, Holla at a Scholar!!:

Blog post with link and background:

[Note to editors: Please link to the blog or blog post rather than directly to the MP3.]

"Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion" looks at the difference in philosophy and strategy between Hip Hop on the east coast and west coast. People forget that the west coast is the home of the Black Panthers and the Brown Berets. When the courts fail to serve justice to the people out west, we riot. Thats why Tupac said "Only in Cali do we riot not rally, so live and die." From Ice Cube to Tupac, Paris and Kam, we have a ton of strong conscious rappers. But the standard myth is that the only conscious rappers come from the east. No doubt our east coast brothers set the standard. But like everything else in Hip Hop, we have our own unique way of being politically active.

Additional tracks from Balance and San Jose's Jay the Butcher and Shamako Noble will be featured on the CD for "Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion".

"In truth, the CD is a tribute to Keith LeBlanc's No Sell Out from back in 1983. It's a tribute to Malcolm X and LeBlanc. When we tell you that you have not heard anything like this before, we mean it. The artistry by which Relm rocked the blends of my lecture with Hip Hop is beyond amazing. To be on the same team as Balance on a mixtape is just an honor in itself. When it comes to 'Lyrical Swords Volume 2: Westside Rebellion', people can either be down now, or bow down later. But the rebellion is on!!," said Banjoko.

In addition the book "Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion" will feature previously unreleased interviews from the late 80s and early 90s with artists such as Master P, Mac Mall, Run D.M.C. and Jam Master Jay, Luniz, Paris, Young Black Teenagers, Slick Rick, Tragedy Khadafi, Spice One, Gangstarr, and many others.

Other dynamic social and political commentary on issues facing today's youth will also be included. A sample MP3 of DJ Mike Relm
s mix can be heard right now at!!

Remy Martin, Hype Williams Kick Off Black Music Month With a 'Toast to 1738'

Campaign Partners with Jazz Alliance International, Rhythm & Blues Foundation to Celebrate the 1,738 Most Influential Songs in Black Music

NEW YORK, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- This year, Remy Martin 1738 and famed hip hop video director Hype Williams will step up the traditional Black Music Month celebration beyond the month of June and recognize black music all summer long with a "Toast to 1738." Inspired by Remy Martin 1738 Accord Royal Cognac, the nationwide celebration will commemorate the 1,738 most influential songs in black music and include a ten-city, tour featuring Hype.

"1738 is a special cognac in a class all its own. It was created in honor of the year that the royal recognition of excellence was given to Remy Martin by the King of France. The expert craftsmanship that goes into 1738 mirrors the finest traditions of all of the music honored on the 1738 list," said Steve Hissam, Category Director for Remy Martin. "Only by working with music experts like Hype Williams, the members of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation and the Jazz Alliance International could the 1738 song list truly reflect the full contribution of black music to our culture and history."

The Toast to 1738 list is a collection of artists and their songs across all black music genres -- rhythm & blues, rap/hip hop, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae and rock -- beginning in 1920 and continuing to the present. It was compiled through an extraordinary partnership between Remy Martin, Hype Williams and two of the leading and most influential organizations in black music -- the Rhythm & Blues Foundation (RBF) and Jazz Alliance International (JAI).

The group researched billboard charts, archives and personal music collections to compile the initial list. The final song list was decided by non-scientific vote based on the song and artist's overall contributions to music, culture and history. It includes a wide array of artists from jazz legends Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to today's urban music fusions of Usher and Jay-Z.

In what is being dubbed the summer of 1738, Remy Martin and Hype will be on the road raising a glass to the 1738 list at the hottest clubs in major cities, including: Houston, New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and Oakland. At the clubs, Hype will sample a selection of the 1738 songs and toast with Remy Martin 1738 each time one is played.

"I'm looking forward to touring the country with Remy Martin to build appreciation for black music and enjoy many of the songs that have influenced my career," said Hype. "You must first understand music of the past to fully appreciate the music of today. Every modern artist that I work with has been influenced by the work that preceded them."

"Jazz Alliance International welcomes the opportunity to widen audience appreciation for jazz and music influenced by jazz," said JAI President Suzan Jenkins. "We look forward to hearing the next generations' interpretation of the jazz cannon and beyond."

Visit for dates and locations of Hype's appearances or for additional information about Remy Martin 1738 Accord Royal Cognac.

With full fidelity hit singles and tracks from artists like 50 Cent, Modtones DJ turns an ordinary mobile phone into music machine. The firm cites a major demand for hip-hop based ringtones a key to driving much of its success.

Some of the features of Modtones DJ include: the ability to browse various categories, preview the tones including various new arrivals and download them right to your phone.

The BREW 2005 Developer Awards is a global awards program that recognizes and promotes the best BREW applications created by wireless publishers and developers. The winners were revealed during an awards ceremony at the BREW 2005 Conference, held in early June at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego.

In related news, Modtones was also recently announced as the top-selling polyphonic ringtone application according to Verizon Wireless. The BREW 2005 Developer Award comes on the heels of the firm's recent announcement that it will power the delivery of all ringtones and wallpaper to Amp'd Mobile, the first truly integrated 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless service launching later this year.

Bay Area hiphop veteran E-40 will be featured on L.A. hiphop artist Third Degrees upcoming single, Do My Thang. The highly anticipated track is slated to appear on Third Degrees upcoming debut album, The Pedestrian, which had originally been scheduled for release late last year until legal negotiations held the album up. The disc will hit retail outlets on August 2.

Third Degree (Wayne Gillory) walks it like he talks it on this hook-laden, jeep ready album. Third, who hails from South Central Los Angeles, grew up living right around the corner from Dub C of Westside Connection. Says Third, I went to Hiphop High. Washington High School was where I came up. A lot of hiphop artists went there, like Dub C, Crazy Tunes from The Maad Circle, YoYo, DJ Alladin, and Sir Jinx, who DJs for Xzibit, and more. Crenshaw High may have had all the sports people locked up, but Washington has had the music people.

Thirds album is jam packed with 21 serious tracks, including the single Do My Thang, featuring E-40. I like real writers who have subjects and topics, Third proclaims. Im a purist kind of guy.
While the intersection pictured on the albums cover is the corner of L.A.s Imperial and Western, Thirds songs reflect hiphop sensibilities emanating on corners in areas all over the country, so his rhymes hit home with those who are both near and far. Wherever you are when you listen to this album, youre still at the intersection of hiphop beats and masterful rhymes, as the Pedestrian makes his way through your speakers.

The long awaited album is slated for release on Blak Ice Records.

"Hustle & Flow" Set to Heat Up Summer: Sizzling Hip-Hop Soundtrack Due July 12th

Award-Winning Paramount/MTV Film Opens July 13th; "I'm A King" by P$C (Feat. T.I. & Lil Scrappy) Is 1st Single; All-Star Hollywood Concert Set for June 27th

NEW YORK, NY -- (Market Wire - Jun 20, 2005) -- Grand Hustle Entertainment and Atlantic Records have set July 12th for the release of "MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE HUSTLE & FLOW," the sizzling soundtrack to the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award-winning hip-hop drama. The Paramount Classic/MTV Films release is due in theatres across North America on July 13th.

The summer's hottest hip-hop collection, the "HUSTLE & FLOW" soundtrack features an extraordinary line-up of the coolest hip-hop and urban artists, including T.I. & P$C, Juvenile, Trina, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Boyz N Da Hood, Webbie, 8Ball & MJG, Lil Scrappy, Trillville, and many others. The album also includes the film's star, Terrence Howard ("Crash," "Ray"), performing tracks in his lead role as the street hustler-turned-rapper known as DJay.

The first single from the soundtrack will be "I'm A King" by P$C (feat. T.I. and Lil Scrappy). The track -- produced by the King of Crunk himself, Lil Jon -- is set to impact at multi-format radio on June 27th. The single's companion video, directed by Benny Boom, was shot last week in Atlanta, with BET on hand to cover the shoot for "Access Granted."

To keep the heat on, the album's second single has already been slated -- a killer remix of newcomer Webbie's "Bad B**ch," featuring hip-hop diva Trina. Webbie, who hails from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is currently bulleting to the top of the urban charts with "Give Me That" (Asylum/Trill). The "Bad B**ch" companion video was shot last week in Miami. Directed by Dr. Teeth, it will be the subject of a "Makes A Video" episode on MTV2.

The soundtrack also introduces national audiences to the crunk sounds of Al Kapone. Kapone is a longtime Memphis rapper who found a fan in "Hustle & Flow" writer-director Craig Brewer; Brewer insisted that Kapone was the guy to write DJay's raps, to give them a distinctly Memphis sound. Kapone contributes to the soundtrack with two of DJay's raps, "Whoop That Trick" and "Hustle And Flow (It Ain't Ovah)," and one of his own, "Get Crunk, Get Buck."

A number of major events will be held to celebrate "HUSTLE & FLOW," highlighted by a June 27th all-star show at Hollywood's House of Blues, hosted by Trina. The evening will feature a number of the soundtrack's stars -- including T.I. & P$C, Juvenile, Lil Jon, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Boyz N Da Hood, Webbie, Lil Scrappy, and Trillville.

In addition, "HUSTLE & FLOW" artists will make personal appearances at several special movie screening events: On July 6th, Paramount will host a major screening in Memphis, the city where "Hustle & Flow" is set -- with T.I., P$C, and Trina slated to attend. The following day, July 7th, an event will be held at the Fort Hood U.S. Army base in Killeen, Texas -- featuring a screening, an autograph signing by T.I. and Trina, and a live performance by T.I.

MTV will feature "Hustle & Flow" and its soundtrack in a variety of its programming, including a half-hour special entitled "How To Be A Music Hustler" -- featuring exclusive live performances recorded at a recent "MTV $2 Bill" concert in Chicago, along with interviews with T.I., Juvenile, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, and Webbie. "Hustle & Flow" will also be featured in a special installment of "Direct Effect," slated to air on July 13th and featuring soundtrack and movie talent.

On Sunday, July 3rd, Anthony Anderson will host a special "Hustle & Flow" edition of "Sucker Free Sunday" -- MTV2's all-day lineup of hip hop-related programming. Included will be a half-hour news special entitled "My Block: Memphis," which will focus on rappers from Memphis -- the hometown setting for "Hustle & Flow." MTV2 is also featuring the film this week during its "Summer's Hottest" series of vignettes.

In addition, soundtrack artists including Juvenile, Paul Wall, and Webbie will take part in the "Sucker Free Sunday Tour," with dates booked throughout July in such cities as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New Orleans.

The entire "HUSTLE & FLOW" album can be heard via "The Leak" on both and for a full week leading up to the album's July 12th street date. The album will also be highlighted across all MTV platforms, including MTV Jams and mtvU, which also featured the film in its recent story on "Summer Essentials."

Written and directed by Craig Brewer, the critically acclaimed "Hustle & Flow" is the redemptive story of a streetwise Memphis hustler trying to find his voice and realize his long buried dream of becoming a respected rap artist. Winner of the prestigious Audience Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, the film stars Terrence Howard, Anthony Anderson ("The Shield," "Barbershop"), Taryn Manning ("8 Mile," "Cold Mountain"), DJ Qualls ("Road Trip," "The New Guy"), and Ludacris ("Crash," "2 Fast 2 Furious"). "Hustle & Flow" is produced by John Singleton ("Boyz N The Hood," "2 Fast 2 Furious," "Four Brothers") and Stephanie Allain.

Former Vice President Walter Mondale to Address Asian American Journalists Association Convention August 17-20

Convention to Feature Community Town Hall, Concerts by Rapper and Ruff Ryders Recording Artist Jin and Fusion/New Age Keyboard Player Keiko Matsui

MINNEAPOLIS, June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Former Vice President Walter F. Mondale will address the 17th annual national convention of the Asian American Journalists Association, to be held Aug. 17-20 at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. Mondale, who also served as Ambassador to Japan, will speak at the luncheon on Aug. 18.

(Logo: )

The convention, hosted by AAJA's Minneapolis chapter and chaired by Star Tribune television critic Neal Justin, will also feature concerts by rapper and Ruff Ryders recording artist Jin and fusion/new age keyboard player Keiko Matsui. The Twin Cities community will be welcomed at a special town hall meeting examining the relationship between Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, justice and the media.

With more than 2,300 members, AAJA is the nation's largest professional organization for Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists. AAJA encourages young people to consider journalism as a career, develops managers in the media industry and promotes fair and accurate news coverage.

Organizers expect more than 1,000 participants and emphasize that the convention is not just for journalists of color, but open to all professionals and journalism students interested in learning from the industry's top leaders and experts through media training institutes, interactive plenary sessions, workshops, a career fair and more.

"Journalists, students, media professionals and community leaders will all discover new skills, valuable information and business relationships at this year's convention," said Esther Wu, a columnist with The Dallas Morning News and national president of AAJA. "Few other events can deliver in one place an incredible array of the media industry's top journalists and executives, as well as experts on a wide variety of topics."

More convention details and online registration are available at programs/convention, or by calling the AAJA national office at 415-346-2051. Participants registering by June 30 will save $50 off convention fees.

Mondale to Address Convention Luncheon

Former U.S. Vice President Walter F. Mondale has a record of public service that spans more than 40 years. In addition to his work in the White House, Mondale has been a U.S. ambassador to Japan, a U.S. senator and the Minnesota attorney general. He is now the senior counsel with the Minneapolis-based Dorsey & Whitney LLP law firm, and serves as chair of the firm's Asian Law Practice Group, which focuses on representing U.S. and Asian clients.

As Ambassador to Japan from August 1993 to December 1996, Mondale helped to negotiate several U.S.-Japan security agreements, including a resolution to the controversy about the U.S. military presence in Okinawa. He also helped negotiate numerous trade agreements between the U.S. and Japan, and he promoted the expansion of educational exchanges between the two nations. In addition, Mondale attended the annual APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit meetings in Seattle, Jakarta, Osaka and Manila.

In 1998, Mondale also served as former President Clinton's special envoy, traveling to meet with Indonesia's president regarding that country's economic reforms.

Local CBS affiliate anchor Amelia Santaniello and television reporter Arthur Chi'en will emcee the luncheon.

Community Town Hall on Asian American Pacific Islanders, Justice and the Media

A town hall meeting on Aug. 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. will allow community members, leaders and journalists to examine the relationship between Asian American Pacific Islanders, justice and the media.

Several high-profile stories involving AAPIs have made national headlines. An anonymous tip to Homeland Security includes claims of Chinese "dirty nuclear bomber terrorists" entering Boston. Wire services immediately identify four suspects and post artist renderings of them and the alert becomes national headline news; although the tip later proves to be hoax, no apologies are offered to the accused or those who might have been subject to their "profile." A Hmong man is involved in a mass shooting in Minnesota and initial stories imply there is a link between the suspect's cultural heritage and the incident. A Muslim Army chaplain is arrested and charged with espionage and possibly treason, but is later released with all charges dropped.

There has been some perception that these cases are tried in the media. What are the hurdles to justice that AAPIs face? Is there a presumption of guilt when AAPIs are accused of certain crimes? How has the Patriot Act and the War on Terrorism affected AAPIs -- and what does the news media need to know to ensure fair and balanced coverage of the increasing numbers of such cases?

Des Moines Register columnist Rekha Basu will moderate a panel that includes: Minnesota State Senator Mee Moua, former U.S. Army Chaplain Capt. James Yee, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund co-founder Jaideep Singh and UC Davis School of Law professor Bill Ong Hing.

Additional discussion will be provided by Tram Nguyen, Colorlines Magazine executive editor and author of "We Are All Suspects Now: Untold Stories from Immigrant Communities?", and Steve Montiel, director of the Institute for Justice and Journalism, USC Annenberg School for Communication. The town hall is coordinated by author and journalist Helen Zia.

Concerts by Rapper Jin and Keyboardist Keiko Matsui

Convention attendees will be treated to a free concert on Aug. 17 at 10 p.m. by hip-hop artist Jin Au-Yeung, the first Asian American rapper to release a major-label record. Jin's new CD, The Rest is History, challenges negative images of people of Chinese heritage in American culture. New York-based Jin won fame thanks to a lengthy and undefeated run on 106 & Park's "Freestyle Fridays" on BET. His success on that show earned him a deal with the rap collective Ruff Ryders. In addition to two singles and a solo album, Jin played a role in the movie 2 Fast 2 Furious.

The concert venue, the famed First Avenue Club & 7th Street Entry, itself has a history dating back to 1937. It's best known as the club featured in Prince's 1984 film Purple Rain and has played host to U2, REM, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Run DMC and countless others.

Fusion/new age keyboard player Keiko Matsui will perform free for convention attendees only on Aug. 18 from 9 p.m. at the Dakota Jazz Club. With over 1.2 million units sold in the U.S. alone and packed concert halls, she is one of the most recognized artists in the genre. No stranger to the upper reaches of the contemporary jazz album and airplay charts, Matsui was named Top Indie Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Year by Billboard magazine in 1996. Her elegant piano melodies and gentle jazz grooves have enormous appeal and never disappoint her loyal fan base, which she has cultivated through more than a dozen albums and stunning live shows.

Career Fair and Professional Critique Sessions

More than 100 exhibitors and recruiters are expected to participate in the convention's career fair, featuring media companies from across the country. Professional journalists will also conduct one-on-one critique sessions for print, broadcast and online journalists and students during the fair.

The Originators Clothing Brand Honors the Pioneers of Hip-Hop

NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES, June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Originators is the original clothing line committed to the education of the early years of Hip-Hop, honoring the DJs, MCs, Graffiti Writers, and B-Boys that helped pave its way.

"After 30 years of Hip-Hop it was time to look back and give credit and respect to those that helped build it," says founder Adam Bach. "These guys, and still many others, built its very foundation. Hip-Hop is a strong Culture today, and it's time we learn who was instrumental in its conception and growth."

The Originators was started in 2004, by then filmmaker Adam Bach.

"I had a strong desire to tell these guys stories in films. One day, I got the idea. Instead of taking a lot of money that I didn't have and 2 years of my life to tell one guys story, I could tell all of the early Pioneers stories in t-shirts and in clothing. With every shirt I would include a hang-tag w/ a biography of the person on the shirt so that the consumer could learn more about that individual. I saw it as an opportunity to educate on the early years of Hip-Hop, and on those responsible for its growth ... That's when I got the idea for The Originators."

Obviously Mr. Bach is passionate about what he does as he tells me more.

"Every Artist involved in this thing, is under a per-unit licensing deal, so the Artist makes money on every shirt sold bearing their name and likeness. This was very important to us when setting up the company. I wanted the Originator to make money as the company made money. They do well as we do well, and that's the way it should be."

When asked about the company's strategy and growth in the marketplace Mr. Bach answered, "I know this sounds funny but we want to grow organically, almost grassroots, like the Hip-Hop Movement itself. There will be other lines that try to do we have done. They will saturate the marketplace in an attempt to make money ... but the key in this thing is to do things with integrity and to do things correct, historically. We have a large responsibility here and we know it."

The line is currently honoring: Kurtis Blow, Melle Mel, the Cold Crush Brothers, "Love Bug" Starski, GrandWizzard Theodore, Grand Master Caz, Prince Whipper Whip, DJ Disco Wiz, Wanda Dee, and Writers, Tracy 168, and Taki 183.

"We will continue to honor more and more Originators of Hip-Hip because there are so many that deserve it!"

The Originators is sold worldwide, and its' reach is growing. "Wherever there is Hip-Hop there exists the opportunity to educate someone on the early years, and on those responsible for it."

Some of the stores in the United States include: Atrium, Yellow Rat Bastard, Workmen's Outlet, and

Liquid Salvation Makes the Scene

LAKE TAHOE, NV -- (Market Wire - Jun 20, 2005) -- Liquid Salvation, the bottled water brand with style and attitude to spare, is quickly gaining converts this summer, thanks in part to recent alliances as the official bottled water sponsor of two wildly popular television show crews, MTV's "Pimp My Ride," and "Monster Garage," starring motorcycle icon, Jesse James.

Liquid Salvation is the first company to bottle water in a flask, which they designed as a stylish replica of the World War II fighter pilot's flask. The convenience of this modernized design has also attracted many athletes, who appreciate its snug fit in a pocket or jacket -- as well as for travelers looking to economize luggage space.

The 1940s-style, sexy pin-up "She-Devil" label and cheeky tagline, "Pure Water for an Impure World," set Liquid Salvation apart from other brands of water. The Lake Tahoe-based company sources its water from natural mountain springs in the U.S. and encourages people to take a stance on environmentalism with their irreverent reminder on the label that reads, "Don't Be a Moron; Recycle!"

Since being launched last October, the brand has quickly developed a loyal following at some of the top nightclubs on the west coast, including the number one hip hop hot spot in Las Vegas, OPM, and Los Angeles' newest glamorous, A-list venue, Mood, whose celebrity guests include the likes of Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, and Charlize Theron. Although they are sold in traditional beverage outlets such as grocery and convenience stores, flasks of Liquid Salvation are also popping up at ski resorts, tattoo parlors, skate shops and trendy salons.

The Liquid Salvation Water Wagon, a colorfully wrapped 30-foot motor coach, has been frequenting festivals, special events and sporting events along the west coast to help build brand awareness.

"We're on a mission to combat the evil effects of dehydration, and this is a tremendous way to get our message out," said Liquid Salvation president, Chris "Reverend" Warner. "We're taking a medieval approach to the bottled water industry; town to town, village to village, with our battle cry, 'Ask for the Flask.'"

Mike Jones' "Who Is Mike Jones?" RIAA Certified Platinum

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/17/2005 -- In less than two (2) months, the debut release from Houston-based rising rap star MIKE JONES' "Who Is Mike Jones?" (Warner Bros./Asylum/SwishaHouse) has been RIAA CERTIFIED PLATINUM.

"Who is Mike Jones?," which debuted at #3 on Billboard's "Top 200" chart and #1 on Billboard's "Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums" and "Top Rap Albums" charts, continues to sell more than 40,000 copies a week.

"It feels good, I'm blessed. Thanks to God and my fans, I'm successful. This is a dream come true. I've been working on getting to this level for 4 years now, so, to me, it didn't happen over night. I've been grinding for a while which makes landing at the top of the charts and going platinum sweeter. If you don't grind, you don't shine," states Mike Jones.

MIKE JONES has been featured in top major music magazines including Rolling Stone, XXL, Blender, The Source, and Vibe. He's also graced the cover of the Arts and Entertainment section of the New York Times and has been reviewed in other top newspapers including Los Angeles Times and the Boston Globe.

Soren Baker of Los Angeles Times asserts, "Jones, whose good-natured rap-attitude and ability to pick a spectacular array of beats has allowed him to be one of the few Houston rappers ever to break nationally."

MIKE JONES took self promotion to another level when he began to repeat his name literally hundreds of times on his debut album as well as giving his cell phone number out on his songs to hear back from his fans.

"By now everyone should know that my Grandmother helped me with this marketing idea and when nobody else believed in me, she did. So I went with what she suggested and it worked," Jones explains.

MIKE JONES' new single, "Back Then," produced by the same team, Salih Williams and Michael "5000" Watts (owner of SwishaHouse and famed chopped and screwed DJ), that produced his first single, "Still Tippin'" is seeing over 12 million in radio audience and was featured as one of MTV2's "Making of the Video," a privilege for any new artist.

Terence McPhaul, Mental Health Therapist, Personal Advisor to the Stars, and author of The Celebrity Psyche is overwhelmed at the success of his latest provocative release, The Psychology of Hip Hop. Media watchers suggest the book is successful probably because he [McPhaul] explains why Hip Hop has such a bad rap, and how Hip Hop has become synonymous with mayhem and murder. Even McPhauls critics announce that The Psychology of Hip Hop is conspicuously difficult to dismiss.
The Psychology of Hip Hop is an enlightened examination of the world of Hip Hop, and how this music genre has shaped the American landscape. Going where no one else dares, The Psychology of Hip Hop effectively explains behaviors of some of the best known Hip Hop stars, like 50Cent, Eminem, Jay-Z, T.I., Lil Kim and Snoop Dogg. Remarkably, Whitney Houstons behavior is accurately assessed. Think you know? Guess again!
The Psychology of Hip Hop outlines the complex maze of R. Kellys sexual indiscretions while answering volatile questions such as is Sean P.Diddy Combs really a Psychopath? Terence McPhaul fervently addresses the deaths of Christopher Notorious B.I.G. Wallace and Tupac Shakur and disputes claims of an East Coast versus West Coast rivalry being the cause, citing greed of record company executives could be the cause of their murders.
McPhaul has been the voice of reason in most of the major media stories involving celebrities, and was the first to publicly announce Michael Jacksons innocence at the outset of molestation charges that were brought against the pop star.
McPhaul is regularly sought by program directors of TV talk shows and other national media as an expert in the field of Mental Health to deliver perspective or respond to programming regarding social and behavioral issues. McPhaul has appeared as a Mental Health expert for Court TV, and Bill OReillys The OReilly Factor for FOX News.

Decorated emcee invests in himself and goes totally Independent with new musical venture on June 28th

(New York, NY) - Applying the razor sharp wit, steadfast intelligence and arduous work ethic that propelled him to elite circles in Hip-Hop, esteemed rapper Royce Da 5'9" truly changes the game, when he declares June 28th as his own Independent's Day. Raising anticipation for the project is the soul-injected, Cee Lo Green-assisted "Politics." The hysteria created on the streets and in cyber space rolls out a well-laid plan by the artist-turned-businessman. "I'm going to put the fire on the streets to generate the steam like an indy would, but with my team I'll be able to sustain the heat and collect the paper of a major label," states Royce."I started my career with a major label, I soaked up most of that game by doing most of the work. Now my efforts will put me way better off monetarily."
The quest to meld commerce and creativity has not compromised the lyrical excellence that's become expectant of a Royce da 5'9" album. In fact, the no risk, no reward venture has intensified the delivery, flow and content, as demonstrated on thepulse pounding, anthemopening salvo "I Owe You."
Expose all the nonsense, They don't hear the lines then/
They don't read the fine print, or they don't really compre-hend/
fellaspens ain't been doin' what I been
doin for the last 7 years lookin'for profit
I o-w-e you people more than just a video with chickens wearin' see through
clothing with the g string, rolling with the bling, bling
posing for the press with the rollie and the vest.
Aside from making a dramatic statement, the title also serves a subtle metaphor to the rest of the industry on the future of MIC records. "Independent's Day" is not just the album's title, but it's also a mind state," explains Royce. "All the artists chosen to be collaborators are unsigned or independent, that have been bubbling. We plan to take that underground buzz and put them over the radar."The infectious hook of the Carlos "6 July" Broady-produced, crunk-tinged "Lookin' at my Dog" features an appearance by Tennessee's finest young flame shooter Yo Gotti. Other features include young Detroit lions Juan and Kid Vicious who demonstrate through their performances appreciation for the shot at the spotlight on the rugged, raw, "Right Back" produced by K.I.D.D. Pleasantly surprising to Royce's core audience is the commercially viable smoker, "Wet My Whistle" featuring the sensual vocals of fellow Detroit native Sara Stokes, from MTV's Making The Band fame.
Next in line is the aptly titled album July 5th and then a collaborative effort with super producer Nottz called Politics. "We're aiming for consistence," Royce concludes. "We're goingto flood the streets with quality product and raise the bar of music in the market.

AOL Music Spotlights Six New Artists as This Season's Breakers

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 2005--America Online, Inc.:

-- Innovative Breakers Program to Introduce the Most Promising Up-and-Coming Artists to Vast Audiences on

-- Success of Breaker Band Sugarland Paves Way for Fall Out Boy, Yummy Bingham, Trey Songz, Natasha Bedingfield, The Veronicas and Keith Anderson

Further solidifying its reputation as the premier destination for music fans to discover and experience music, AOL(R) Music is spotlighting six diverse up-and-comers through its innovative Breakers program.

Dedicated to providing a vast audience of music fans with early access to the hottest developing artists, AOL Music is showcasing music by Australia's 20-year-old Pop-rockers, The Veronicas; contemporary Country singer Keith Anderson; Hip Hop singer/songwriter Yummy Bingham; British Pop chanteuse Natasha Bedingfield; R&B singer/songwriter Trey Songz and Chicago Pop-punks Fall Out Boy. These artists and their music will be featured in high-profile campaigns, normally reserved for more established hit makers, on and across the AOL Music and Radio Networks.

"It's amazing that AOL chose us as part of the Breakers program. We feel that with their involvement, we can reach another level of fans who might not have heard us," said Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz. "We are honored that they are behind us and it's a winning combination for all."

"With traditional TV, radio and touring pipelines growing narrower in their willingness and ability to support new music, it is especially satisfying to serve artists with our Breakers program," said Jack Isquith, Executive Director of Music Industry Relations for AOL Music. "The mainstream audience for music has moved to the Web and opened a new world of opportunity for developing acts to connect with fans. We feel strongly that this is our most impressive group of Breaker artists to date, and we remain committed to championing new music to our ever growing audience."

Joining ranks with AOL Music Breakers alumni including Josh Groban, The Game, Michelle Branch and John Legend, Sugarland is the program's latest success story. The first Country group to be named to AOL Music's Breakers program, Sugarland made their debut on AOL Music in September of 2004. The band's hit song, "Baby Girl" made its exclusive debut on the program and garnered significant attention from the AOL Music audience before taking off at radio. The song quickly shot up to the #1 spot on the AOL(R) Radio Network chart and was recently certified Digital Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, selling more than 100,000 digital downloads. is currently featuring an All Sugarland video channel, including their exclusive AOL Music Sessions performances of the songs "Baby Girl," "Just Might Make Me Believe," "Fly Away," "Speed of Life" and "Something More," as well as a full CD Listening Party of the Twice the Speed of Life, the band's debut album, which is certified Gold by the RIAA with sales of over 500,000 and is rapidly approaching Platinum.

"AOL Music has been an invaluable partner in helping to bring Sugarland to the masses," said Luke Lewis, Co-Chairman of Universal Music Group Nashville. "They are incredibly dedicated to developing artists, and have the expertise to create compelling campaigns that really resonate with music fans online. There's no denying that the band's success is due in part to the ability to interact with millions of music fans through the Breakers program."

AOL Music's newly named Breaker artists include:

The Veronicas (Sire Records) - Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, The Veronicas are 20-year-old twin sisters that blend the mass pop-rock appeal of Avril Lavigne with the attitude of Debbie Harry from Blondie. Lisa and Jess Origliasso co-wrote the songs on their debut album while working with star producers such as Don Gilmore (Good Charlotte, Linkin Park), Billy Steinberg (Madonna), Clif Magness (Lavigne), Max Martin (Britney Spears) and Dr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson). The Veronicas debut album, titled The Secret Life of The Veronicas, is scheduled for release this fall on Sire Records.

Trey Songz (Atlantic) - Songz is a young, charismatic R&B singer/songwriter that is already starting to generate big buzz on AOL Music and Rhythmic radio. He has delivered a strong AOL Music Sessions performance, which includes exclusive takes on the album tracks, "Gotta Make It," "Gotta Go" and "Let's Make Love Tonight." Like Brooke Valentine, he was named to AOL Music's 21 Under 21. His debut album, I Gotta Make It, will be released on July 26 and will feature guest appearances by Twista, Aretha Franklin and Juvenile.

Fall Out Boy (Island) - Fall Out Boy are primed to follow in the footsteps of My Chemical Romance and Simple Plan as the next breakthrough, mass appeal Pop-Punk band. They have a ferocious fan base, and are already selling out shows of over 1000 seat capacity. Through AOL Music Breakers, which is already promoting a Full CD Listening Party for the debut album Under the Cork Tree, and audio and video for the hit single "Sugar, We're Going Down," the band is poised to take things to the next level.

Natasha Bedingfield (Epic) - The multi-talented singer/songwriter's self-penned debut album, Unwritten, debuted at #1 upon its September 2004 UK release, and by the second week it was platinum. Bedingfield is only the third solo singer in history to debut in the UK's top chart position. Now, as an AOL Music Breaker, she sets her sights on the U.S. "These Words," the first single off her debut album, Unwritten, is one of the catchiest songs of the year. The album is scheduled to land on this side of the pond on August 2.

Keith Anderson (Arista Nashville) - Country's next breakout star, Keith Anderson, is already making a splash with his Top 15 single, "Pickin' Wildflowers." No stranger to hit songs, having co-written the Grammy-nominated Garth Brooks/George Jones hit "Beer Run," as well as Gretchen Wilson's "The Bed," Anderson's debut album, Three Chord Country and American Rock & Roll, is true to its title, offering a powerful showcase for his colorful lyrics and charismatic delivery.

Yummy Bingham (Motown Records) - 19 yr old singer/songwriter Yummy Bingham is music royalty. As the godchild of Chaka Khan and the "New Jack Swing King" Aaron Hall, she has been surrounded by music since birth. She's worked with a wide range of musical luminaries including Mary J. Blige, Amerie, Patti LaBelle, Busta Rhymes, JC Chasez and her mentor, superstar producer Rockwilder (Grammy winning producer for 50 Cent, Destiny's Child, & Jay Z). Her influences range from classic R&B to rock and roll, and her debut album, First Seed, contains songs that are playful, edgy, melodic and soulful.

Each season, AOL Music handpicks the most promising new artists to spotlight as Breakers. These artists are featured in high profile campaigns across the AOL Music network. Elements of these innovative campaigns include song and video debuts, AOL Music Sessions appearances and rotation on the AOL Radio Network. Past AOL Music Breakers include Avril Lavigne, Josh Groban, 50 Cent, Michelle Branch, Jet, Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, The Game and Brooke Valentine.

AOL Music is the #1 online destination for music, reaching more than 24.2 million music fans a month* through a rich array of programming, products and services that make it easy to discover, experience, listen to and buy music online. It All Adds Up For 857

857 is an innovative hip-hop act whose music is a fusion between old school philosophy mixed with contemporary beats and rhymes. The vibe of their music is similar to rap groups such as Black Eyed Peas, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest.

(PRWEB) June 18, 2005 -- Becoming displeased and concerned with this direction rap music seems to be going since its arguably most innovative period in the early 90s, lyricists Tur-Bo, Y.K.C., the 23rd Stallion, and beatmaker, AL-G decided to form 857 in order to provide an alternative to many of the current mainstream trends promoted by the industry and restore the originality, creativity, and variety that hip-hop used to offer. This philosophy is deeply embedded within their music since it collectively embodies all the elements of hip-hop that they've enjoyed and always appreciated combined to form a new style and sound. As a result, 857s music carries the spirit of old school hip-hop mixed with contemporary beats and rhymes, creating a vibe that's similar to groups like Black Eyed Peas, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Fugees, and Jurassic 5.

Unlike the average rap group, 857 is far from one dimensional and their songs contain much more substance. They are fully capable of delivering many different kinds of songs across a wide variety of topics ranging from party anthems, roleplaying and storytelling tales, personal reflections, political and media controversies, relaxed vibes, and overall entertaining tracks. The group even possesses the versatility to mix styles with other genres of music such as rock, reggae, pop, jazz, and spoken word. This diversity is offered throughout their new album, Stand Out.

Their primary focus is to create songs that people will find interesting and/or entertaining, mixed with ideas and scenarios they can relate to. Whats also interesting about the group is that the lyricists Tur-Bo, Y.K.C. and the 23rd Stallion sound completely distinctive in style, flow, and voice, and individually contribute something different to the overall vibe of the music. Overall, their witty, creative, lyrical talents collectively combined with the insane instrumentals provided by the multi-talented methodical mastermind, AL-G, allow 857 to demonstrate a sound, vibe, and energy thats rarely found in todays hip-hop industry.

857 has already performed in many famous venues in New York, such as Downtime, Southpaw, The Downtown, and Munchaba Lounge to name a few. In 2004, 857 made it to the final round (last 6 bands out of 36) of the Battle of the Bands which took place in August, 2004 - Levittown, NY.

In addition to live perfomances , 857 has also been featured in Newsday (Impulse), and has been listed on Broadjam's ( Top 10 numerous times.

Singles from Stand Out (Where's the Beef?, Chillin', Frontpage and Barface) are currently receiving spins from internet radio and college radio stations across the country and overseas.
